Question about Kenmore Elite HE5t Washer
Main bearing for drum has a squeak that started of slow and over 2-3 months has grown to be load and likely a huge problem. It is no longer a squeak but we stopped using it because the bearing is obviously totally wiped out. We want the repair and place parts ourselves

This is usually a symptom of a bad motor control board which located under the console. I had the same problem. You can open the console by removing the three screws in the back and lifting from the rear first. The console will pop off. In addition, if you look along washer top front edge in the seam there is a retaining clip about 2 inches in from each side. Using a putty knife, push in on each clip while lifting and the top should pop up. There will be a tech sheet affixed to the front wall of the washer between the wash tub and case. This tech sheet will give you all the guidance necessary on how to perform tests to prove whether or not the motor controller is at fault, or if the pump is at fault. I believe you may have a motor controller problem, though. Another possibility is getting something caught in the drain pump reservoir. This could binding the pump. Let me know if any of this is helpful to you.

We opened the top of the washing machine and there are some suspension springs.
All it needed was some lubrification. Prior to putting the top back on we put a load in
and watched it and there was no more noise.

sorry to say, this almost certainly means that the main bearings on the drum have failed. This
is NOT a job for the uninitiated DIY enthusiast as it will mean stripping the
machine and removing the drum from the chassis, splitting it, removing pressed
in bearings and then sourcing and re-fitting new bearings.
To be frank, the cost of a bearing set (if they are replaceable , and most are) will be about £20 (($30) or so. But its a long and horrible job if you haven't done it before. I know professionals who claim they can do a bearing change in under an hour, I've done a few and it takes me about 2 hours by the time I
