Netgear WG602 wireless router, Connection Local only !

Same Router new problem!

I purchased a new laptop that runs on Vista - Home Premium. When I try to connect to the Access Point, I am able to connect, but the connection is always 'Local" only. i.e. internet does not get connected.

I tried resetting the cable modem (motorola), unplugging the power.

I tried doing that with the wireless router as well.

Tried to diaganose the problem thru Vista and tried to get new IP addresses.

i also tried by putting an IP address --ipv4 as,,

but nothing seems to work. I get connected but cannot access internet. When i plug in the lan cable directly thru ethernet access, it works fine.

my wirless router DHCP setting is enabled

pls advise.

Re: Netgear WG602 wireless router, Connection Local only...

What I think is you unplgged them at the wrong times.

Do this:
(in this order)

  1. Turn off the router.
  2. Turn off the modem.
  3. take out all the Ethernet cords from the router, EXCEPT the one coming from the modem
  4. Now turn the modem on.
  5. Wait for the lights, then wait about another minute for it to settle.
  6. Turn on the router, make sure the Internet,Lan,Wlan, etc lights are on and functional if it doesn't display a light let me know.
  7. Now depending on what your wireless network (SSID) is called try to connect to it. Go to Start>Network>Click Network And Sharing Center at the top>on the left select Manage Wireless Networks>now click add, if your network is already on the list shown select it and click remove otherwise click "Add" click "add network in reange of this computer" select your network name and click connect.
Now tell me the errors, like if it says connection limited,etc...

Yes your Router supports UpnP.
Here is the manual where I found the information. Once the manual is open ctrl+F will open a find window. In the find window enter UPnP and click enter on your keyboard. This will take you to the section explaining UPnp and how it works on your router.

Good Luck!!

I believe you are using the wrong IP. Try instead. The way you can confirm is go to start>run type in "ipconfig" and press enter. Look for your gateway ipaddress. This is most commonly the IP you need to use to login to the router.

Netgear WG602 wireless router,

Hi, Assuming that the WG602 is fully operational, when you did a hard reset, the router reverted to its original factory setting as you posted. The default pre-configuration: act as a DHCP client; if the WG602 does not find a DHCP server on the Ethernet LAN, it defaults to this IP configuration: DHCP Client - Enable IP Address ? IP Subnet Mask ? Gateway ? Your PC need to be connected via a LAN cable to one of the Ethernet ports of the AP/Router to be able to configure it again to your desired network settings. Further it is necessary likewise to manually configure the connected PC's networking configuration to match the router. Manually configure your PC's IP Address to, Subnet Mask ?, Gateway - You can now try configuring the router through its web interface ( This is better explained in the user's manual available at the Netgear site ( Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards.
