Lines print on copies when put through the scanner. But do not appear on copies when placed on the glass

When making copies through the scanning process the paper has one kind of thick black line down the paper about 3-1/2" from the left side of the paper and then two other thinner lines about 1" to the right and 1-1/2" to the left. But, if you lay the paper on the glass and make the copies there are no lines.

Bizhub C652 has horizontal lines.


its important to find out whether the \'lines\' are in scan direction/ or only through Radf or only from scan glass,

if the lines are only showing when documents are fed throught the Radf, then the problem lies with the document scan plate( left of the main glass platen (about 2" in width)) or with the scan plate blade cleaner

if the lines ONLY appear when copying from the Glass then the issue lies within the optics (probably nothing more than a clean will be needed)

another question would be to ask if the lines are solid (black line overprinting image) or if they are \'missing\' lines where the image has failed to copy, sometimes it can be hard to work out which side the fault lies,so try shaded greys as a copy original .

if the scan lines are appearing on both Radf and Glassplatten ,mode then the issue may be dirty optics/ccd sensor or it could e an indication of the ccd failing or image control pwb in error while interpreting the image file.

what to do

1) place a grey sheet of paper in the Radf and have the copier photocopy both sides of the original and print to single sided sheets ( so the printer turns the original over to complete the task)

observe the result.

2) have the copier photocopy directly from the platten glass- single sided.

observe the result.

ckeck to see if the error has appeared on both sets of prints ,

if the error has only appeared in the first set of prints then the issue may be a tiny DOT on the slit glass (left of platten) - a dot on this glass will indeed appear as a Line as the original is scanned across the glass.

This article provides the self-diagnostic steps necessary to evaluate top-to-bottom streaks that appear when copying or scanning.

Important! This is seldom a scanner hardware failure.

The main reason for this anomaly is debris or marks on the scanner glass that is used for Auto document feeder (ADF) page scans.

Who should consider this article?

Any user of an MFP or All-In-One printer experiencing the following symptoms:

  • -Vertical lines only when using the Autodocument Feeder (ADF).
  • -Observed with any type of scan job (e-mail, ftp, solutions, fax).
  • -However, normal expected output when the page is scanned from the scanner flatbed.



ADF scan behavior

Think of it this way:

  • -The page is pulled from the ADF.
  • -The moving page slides across an ADF-designated portion of glass.
  • -The image sensor, which is located under the glass, reads and interprets the moving page's contents.
  • -Contamination on this ADF glass is seen by the image sensor for the entire length of the page.
  • -The image processor interprets the image sensor's repeated capture of this contamination as a vertical solid line.
  • -Any ADF scan function now exhibits a vertical line.

Suggested Diagnosis and Fix




Step Action 1 Locate the portion of the glass designated for ADF scans.
HINT: The glass location differs by model. This area is often separate from the scanner flatbed. Please reference User's Guide for more information if you are having a difficult time locating this designated area.
2 Perform a visual inspection for any of the following recurring culprits:

  • -Clear adhesive tape
  • -Glue
  • -Ink pen
  • -Paper
  • -Marker
  • -White out
  • -Staples
  • -Environmental dust or dirt
HINT: Ink marks can be especially hard to see and almost translucent at first sight. However, the image sensor (CCD) registers them as a mark. 3 Use a clean, soft, moistened cloth to thoroughly clean and remove any marks or debris. 4 Inspect the underbelly or underside of the ADF for any marks or debris. 5 Perform another scan to see if cleaning the glass alleviated the issue. 6 Repeat the procedure if a vertical line still appears.
Remember! Printing and scanning from the scanner flatbed work fine.
7 This time, place an intentional mark on a blank sheet of paper and take note of its location. Now place that sheet of paper in the ADF and make a copy.
8 Evaluate the distance of the vertical line to the your mark. 9 Inspect that area of the glass for further debris or marks and clean as necessary.

Why does lines appear in my printed copy?


If you're getting lines, especially when making copies or scanning, it could be due to some dirt on the scanner glass. Wipe your scanner glass with a lint free cloth. Then try scan or make a copy again to verify that the problem is fixed.

When I copy papers on my Canon imageRunner 2800 there are 2black lines in the middle of the copied paper. How do i solve this problem?


Hello mike,
You may have a fairly easy problem to fix, and that's good thing ! If the lines only appear when you use the document feeder then we can handle this. Please place a document on the platen glass and make a copy. If the copy looks good then we need to clean your "scan" glass. The scan glass is the small glass located to the left of the large platen glass. It's about 3/4" by 14",and will only cause problems when you use the automatic doc feeder.If it gets dirty then thin lines will show up. If indeed this is the problem then I have a test u can use that will help you Take a plain piece of paper. Mentally divide it into 4 squares and then simply write the numbers 1,2,3,4 on each quadrant. At the top edge of your newly formed test document place an arrow pointing away from the body of the paper, and it needs to point "UP".. Now draw an arrow on the test document that points to the left "lead " edge. Put your newly constructed test target in the document feeder and make a copy of it. Now, you KNOW how you placed the test document, so lets look at the copy. If you have lines only thru the document feeder, then look at the copy you made and notice where the lines are. Ok, now you know where the lines show up on the copy, so lets take your "test" document and compare them side by side.Once you have made this comparison, and can see where the lines show up, take the ORIGINAL test document and place it IMAGE UP (1,2,3,4) on the glass. This will point out exactly where the dirt is. By looking at the copy that has lines, and where they show up on the page, you can use the test page that is laying face up on the glass and compare the 2. BOOM !! You can look towards the small scan glass and find the dirt that is causing the lines. With your copier, IF you place a document on the glass then the scanner moves to "scan" the document. But if you use the document feeder, the scanner stays in one spot and the motion of the document moving ACROSS the scanner and is scanned like a bar code. If there is dirt on the scan glass then a line occurs instead of a "blob" as you would see if you used the platen glass.I hope this all makes sense (I tend to ramble) and I hope it helps you. You of course could have far more complex problems. But your description of the problem sounded like my remedy/idea might be just what you need. Colored lines on a copy page


To fix the colored lines on a copy page do the below steps

  1. Disconnect the power cord, wait five seconds, and then plug it back in. This will reinitialize the unit and force the scanner to calibrate again.
  2. Examine the scanner glass and white scan backing. Clean the scanner glass and scan backing if they are not clean. To clean the scanner glass and scan backing, use a soft cloth towel slightly dampened with clean water.
  3. With the product turned on, open the scanner cover and check the bulb assembly. If the scanner bulb is not lit, the unit must be serviced.
  4. Verify that the alignment page is placed on the scanner glass or in the automatic document feeder (if equipped) correctly. Place the printed side down.
  5. Make a copy of the alignment page. The unit will make a copy even if the alignment message is displayed. Compare the copy to the original. If vertical lines appear in the copy, check to see if the scanner assembly requires cleaning. If cleaning the scanner assembly does not correct the problem, service the product.

Vertical line appears in scans using the ADF, but not with copies


happened to me after i fed a page with not-too-hard whiteout on it. the feeder makes the page run through a different piece of glass and i just had to clean it.

the problem is in the scanner, open it up and see if you can find any smudges, and clean any obstruction, any ink, liquid eraser residuals, can cause this part to appear as lines on your copied faxed image.
dont concentrate on the printer this is a scanner problem

Scanner leaves three vertical lines on scanned page


Hello,

A dirty glass base can cause ‘spots’ or blemishes to appear on your final printout. Additionally, if you had some sort of opaque liquid that may have transferred on to the glass base from a previous operation. But the majority of the unwanted vertical lines are generally caused by either a dirty or damaged print roller or faulty LEDs in the Scanner Module.

To separate one from the other you have to check the following:

Do you only see the lines with a Scan operation?
Do your print jobs print fine without any unwanted lines?

If you only see the unwanted lines during a Scan operation, then most likely you have a fault/dirty/obstructed LED module.

If you see the unwanted lines with all print operations (Scan, Print and Copy), then you most likely have a worn out, damaged or dirty Print Roller.

Vertical lines


1st print a report, can you see the lines? Then either the drum is faulty or the laser scanner is. If the lines are not present when printing a report, make a copy and see then if the lines appear. If so, the scanner is faulty. Try cleaning the glass with glass cleaner. However, blank lines mean that bits are missing from the scanner itself and the scanner will need to be replaced.

Print Problem - vertical lines


If the problem only occurs when using the document feeder, the problem is not usually caused by the drum. When using the document feeder, try to notice where the scanner (the light assembly under your scan glass)stops just before the paper is being fed. Some multifunction machines have a small piece of glass that is separate from the large scan glass and the scanner assembly stays parked underneith it as the original is being fed over it. Most likely there is something on the glass where the scanner parks as originals are being fed thru the feeder. When putting your original on the large scan glass to copy, the mark on the glass will only show as a spot, but will show as a vertical line thru the whole copy when using the feeder.
