Re: Belt Removal and Replacement

No.  The motor and pump assembly need to come off.
There is 4 1/2 inch bolts that hold this assembly to the main mechanism.  2 on top and 2 on bottom.  Work belt off bottom pulley on transmission and then remove these bolts.  Turn motor over and remove 3 torx screws holding pump to motor.  Install new belt then reinstall pump with 3 screws.  Reinstall assemblt to mech.  Pu top 2 screws in first then bottom 2.  Be sure belt goes on left side of black plastic idler pulley.  Work belt around transmission pulley.  You can press on opposite end of idler pulley arm to loosen belt tension.  Make sure belt is on all pulleys before testing.

Repair a belt on a washing machine for a speedqueen

Remove the front panel by removing the three screws at the bottom of the panel and then tilting it up to unhook it at the top. Make sure the machine is disconnected from the electrical power - not just switched off but unplugged at the socket. Look for the belt between the electric motor and the main drive pulley of the agitator and also locate the belt tensioner which is a small pulley pressing against the belt under tension of a spring hook onto it. Pull and keep the tensioner away by hand to allow the removal of the belt starting at the motor pulley. Replace with the new belt by starting at the agitator pulley. Keep the tensioner pulley out of the way until the belt is fitted on both pulleys and then allow it to settle against the belt again. Do not adjust the spring tension and buy the correct belt from speed queen as it requires a graphite type belt. An ordinary vehicle v-belt will not work - repeat will not work. Replace the cover by hooking it in first at the top and then replacing the screws at the bottom.

How tight should the belt be? Is there a tightener?

Hello Joel,
When the washer is off their is going to some play in the belt,it could be pushed as much a inch before the motor slide. That is a perfecly normal tightness, when it spins the bely is supposed to tighten and that slackness wont be there. Their is a automatic adjuster on the plate that the motor mounts onto, that perhaps is hanging up and could be lubricated(DO NOT USE WD40 TO LUBE IT,BUT INSTEAD SOMETHING 3N1 LIQUID LIGHT OIL) also check that the spring bewteen that plate and the base frame has movement and it isn't hanging up. If your washer agitate and drains BUT doesn't spin its going to be the transmission pulley that hanging up,their is a pulley kit that will fix that. the part number for that pulley kit is 12002213

The washer (#WBSR3140GWW) does not spin on the spin cycle and the clothes come out very wet. What could be wrong??

The most probable trouble is the belt is streched and needs replacing. To replace belt remove front panel by placing a putty knife about two inches inward from the ends of front panel push the putty knife in and release clips for front panel.remove panel and belt will on bottom under the motor. On a lot of GE washers the oil in transmission leaks and soaks belt in oil so soon new belt will be oil soaked and needing replacment again if ya see a lot of oil in base belt will fix temporarly till its oil soaked, the fix then is to replace washer since trans. replacement is more than new washer

excessive oil . is usualy found under the machine / if inside / on side's of shell this could be water seal leakage . the 511 is a very good machine but its also very old . . agit problem is usualy in the belts and motor roller base . /try cleaning the pulleys and replace belt set / 2011124 and 2011125 / put a roller base set w springs . this will perk it up ,,use info on belt package for belt adjustment. they run loose. ( do not over tighten .)

Removing Back Panel of Kenmore Washer Model 11020902990

if its less than 15 years old its a direct drive whirlpool, no belt, remove the cabinet, not the back panel. look up direct drive whirlpool washer cabinet removal on internet, and replace the coupler, most likely, if it drains.

My maytag washer won't turn or spin..

This advice is for certain Maytag TOP LOADING washers equipped with a vertical transmission and drive belt system.

Loud squeaking noises during the wash cycle or, at the end of the spin cycle, can be attributed to a worn snubber ring and/or brake assembly. The snubber is a plastic ring located under the tub support. It helps to reduce vibration as the tub agitates and spins. You cannot lubricate the snubber to get rid of the noise. In fact, you may damage the washer if you do. A small amount of corn starch can be sprinkled under the bottom tub support where the snubber ring is located to get rid of some noise related problems (this will be the round metal plate where the tub support meets the bottom casing of the machine). A worn snubber will also cause some vibration or out of balance problems. The brake tends to glaze over after it has become worn and will squeak or cause sudden jerking of the washer when the spin cycle stops. If the corn starch tip does not get rid of the squeaks, I would recommend replacing the following parts:

Brake Stator
Brake Rotor and Lining

You will need: Brake Removal Kit*

*Brake removal tool is required in order to remove the brake assembly and/or to replace the snubber. There is a 200lbs brake spring located under the Brake Stator that must be compressed PRIOR to removal or you could cause injury to yourself.

The parts required to make the repairs aren't very expensive, but the tool required to do it can cost about $100. This repair I would rate as DIFFICULT for the average do-it-yourselfer. If you've never worked on this type of washer before, this is not a job that I would recommend. However, Maytag DOES provide informative how-to instructions with all their parts.

To replace the snubber and brake assembly:

1. Remove the front case of the washer to access the washer interior.
2. Tilt the washer towards the back and remove the drive belt. Slide the drive motor towards the center pulley to relieve belt tension.
3. Remove the drive pulley by removing the center cap and retaining ring from the drive shaft. Remember how these components go back together. There should be a couple of plastic drive bearing pieces and some metal washers above the pulley on the shaft.
3. Lower washer and remove hoses from the wash tub.
4. Remove the suspension springs. NOTE: Pulling the wash tub towards the spring you are removing will release some of the tension on it.
5. I usually remove the entire wash tub with transmission still installed at this point and place it upside down outside the washer for ease of accessing everything. (There are other methods, but I find this one easier).
6. This is where the brake compression tool will be required to remove the brake rotor, stator and snubber ring. (Instructions come with the tool). Basically, it involves compressing the spring by turning the compression tool CW with a wrench, loosening all the bolts on the brake stator housing, and then slowly turning the compression tool CCW.
7. The brake compression tool is removed at this point and the snubber, brake rotor, brake stator and brake spring can be accessed.
8. Replace any worn parts, and reassemble the brake assembly. DO NOT forget to place the brake spring back in place before putting the brake rotor back on.
9. Place the tub assembly right side up and lower back into washer.
10. Reconnect all hoses back to wash tub.
11. Reinstall all tub suspension springs. NOTE: It’s easier to start in the back of the washer and work your way towards the front.
12. Tilt washer back and reinstall drive pulley. NOTE: When placing drive pulley back on shaft turn pulley slightly to ensure it is seated all the way on the shaft. NOTE: If the shaft had multiple metal washers, you may only need ONE after replacing the snubber ring. Retain the extra washer for later use if needed. If the drive pulley is reinstalled correctly, a groove will be visible at the end of the drive shaft for the retaining ring to go back in place.
13. Reinstall drive belt.

NOTE: The following link lists the recommended tools to complete this repair:

Spring Removal Tool (item #455570)
Brake/Bearing/Seal Removal Tool Kit (item #997909)

Changing a belt on a kenmore washing machine

99% of kemore washers (anything after 1950)
dont have a belt. and
the back does not come off for repair, the front does, with the removal of 2 screws

If the washer does not agitate or spin the usual cause is a plastic & rubber coupling between the motor and gearbox. replacement gearbox couplings now have a metal hub to prevent further breakage.
If this matches the problem you are trying to fix, reply & I will step by step the replacement process, its 2 screws, 2 bolts, a hammer & dowel & some time, to fix

How do i replace the belt

simple enough the replacement belt hooks around the tranny pulley and the motor pulley, theres tension pulley spring mounted to the motor assy (spring loaded) simply push it in and wrap the belt around the outside of it so when you release it it adds tension to belt, your done!
