I have the XS35 and the HDD drive is curropt. Can I do the following?
1. Download the Toshiba firmware update:
http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/customersupport/model_firmware.asp?model=rd-xs34
2. Burn the ISO to a CD-R disc. ImgBurn is an excellent free burner for this.
http://www.imgburn.com/
3. Insert the CD in your unit. It will auto-install the firmware. Follow onscreen instructions. Takes about 10 minutes total.
After the update, my existing HDD shows are playable again, and I can record and playback from the HDD. I bet it would be a good idea to periodically backup your shows on DVDs, and regularly reformat the HDD.

I have the RD-XS34SC model and recently had this data corruption problem also. Could you please let me know what firmware upgrade exactly you mean and where to find it as it's gone now from Toshiba's website. Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you. Reg
Reg, I have an ISO, the name is RDXS34V1-2.iso, and I think this is the firmware I installed, but it's been 4 years so I don't recall exactly. Anyhow here's the file I have:https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5913... Best of luck with it! The front display clock is now useless, since Toshiba locked out manual clock setup, but TV Guide has gone kaput. Still use it as a backup DVD player tho.
Thanks Eric, but can you please tell me what this firmware was supposed to do and if it's good for any RDXS34 version like 34SC, 34SU, etc. as there was another firmware upgrade that was supposed to allow for clock manual setting and yours apparently did the opposite. I want to be sure I don't do any worse to the unit than already has been done. How did all your shows play again after and did they all reappear in the content menu once again? Thanks again.
Hey Eric. It's been a few months now and you haven't responded. Please let me know. Thanks.
Hi Reg. I can't recall if there was any documentation with the firmware. But the Canadian site for Toshiba has a firmware download, might work for you.http://support.toshiba.ca/support/ceg/ce... I am not able to set the clock on my unit, it's still locked to the dead TV Guide service. However all my recorded shows appeared again in the content menu, and seem to play back OK. Also able to use the DVD recorder, Firewire input, dvd playback, etc. No problems.
Hi Eric. That link you gave is for allowing manual resetting of the clock. Did you try this upgrade? it's the only one shown on the Toshiba Canada site. Is this the one you used before?
I found the ISO I used RDXS34V1-2.iso but I can't find it on the web any more. I bet Toshiba removed it from their site. I uploaded it here, hope it works for you.https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5913...
BTW, I did not use the Canadian firmware. My file came from another Toshiba site, I think the US one.

Same problem but hard disk won't format.
No alternative. Reformat the drive and continue with your life... Mine has done this at least a dozen times, it appears to be more sensitive when the HD is fragmented. If you dont listen to the instructions and chapter and cut out the commercials you will see this often, usually around page 15 or so of your disk filled.
All my HDD videos are suddenly corrupted, totally unplayable.
Playback failed. Previously recorded data may have been corrupted.
Can't dub to DVD either. In the past I have exised commercials from many of them. Reformat completes successfully. Can record new shows, but none of them are playable. Looks like it's dead Jim.
