Find carburetta that has connection to thottle control handle or remote box , i dont know how meany carbs you have but on multi carbs there is one that is main controler for linkage ! on that carb it will have a screw that holds the tickover , adjust this so you have 800 rpm and then test in lake and select forward and see if enough !

How do you set the idle on an evinrude motor

The motor end of the control cable has an adjustment on it where it is clamped down to the cowl. Loosen the clamp nut and screw the cable end in or out to get your desired idle speed.

Be sure to run the recommended fuel mix. most modern 2 stroke outboard engines run on 100 to 1, some times the mix is on a decal inside the cowl.

My mercury 35 hp outboard motor idle's fine but won't run

While at the river try to adjust the fuel air mixture. When you are on the water it puts the engine under a load and if that dont work then dont be afraid to bump up the idle stop screw slightly.

Motor spits and sputters

If it is old enough to have points then I would check them and make shure they are clean and gapped at .020. if that is noth the problem then it sounds like a fuel issue. Either a weak pump or a dirty carb.
