The thermostat is a probe installed in the burn chamber accessible by removing the screw or screws holding it on the front of the chamber. If the top of the heater was aligned with the top of your head the thermistor would be about the height of your chin. it has a single wire attached to it and when the screw is removed the thermostat pulls out and looks like a stiff metal wire. Clean it with emery cloth but don't touch the probe with your fingers. Don't be to rough or you will break it. Reinstall and test unit when done

I have a tf325 bosch hotwater heater , problem is the flame will not stop when hotwater is turned off ?? Why and how to fix

After hot water has been drawn, the refill contents have to be heated to a set temperature in anticipation of the next demand. Otherwise, there would be a rush of cold or lukewarm water instead of hot.

Thank you for providing clear description of product:
Your water heater has intellivent gas control thermostat.
There are always problems with water heaters. It is a huge field.

1) Open following link for AO Smith service manuals.
I do not see service manual specifically for the GP series.
http://www.hotwater.com/resources/product-literature/service-handbooks/

2) Open following link to identify gas valve and download typical service manual:
Some AO smith power vent models have intellivent gas valve, and some have smart valve gas vent. Older models might have knob-type gas valve.

I have an instant hotwater system with the futher most bathroom about 45' away. I am looking at adding a recirculating pump on a timer at the furthermost bathroom to get hotwater quickly in the...

Maybe I am not understanding your problem exactly, but if you have the instant hotwater system installed it should be measuring the temperature of the water in the hot water line and if it drops below the set level it should open the hot water side until the temperature is reached. If it was installed correctly it puts the hot water back into the cold water line so it isn't wasted.

If the water heater shuts off again unplug the white the sensor plug underneath the thermostat (The black plastic box). Then plug it back in. This sensor plug has a black and white wire going to it and it's possible the plug could have been loose going into the thermostat..
If the problem persists you will need to contact the manufacturer at 1-877-817-6750 and they can assist you.

A very old rheem fury water heater i assume it's just worn out but because of a space problem i can't go wider than the 15 inch diameter it has.

16" diameter water heaters could work if you cut away the metal and insulation off of 1 side of the water heater. The actual tank inside the shell is smaller than outside diameter.

You can get a tankless water heater if you have the additional money and a water filtration and softener system and don't mind expensive repairs if you install it yourself.
