Let it scan, if it takes so long the HDD might be damaged (bad sectors)

SOURCE: cannot recover data from dell latitude d610 hard drive

Try removing the hard drive and connecting it to ab USN hard drive adapter, then plug this USB adapter and hard drive into the USB port of a working computer.
If this computer can see this as an external storage device and if you are lucky you can open the various folders and files then you can back up your data.
I think this hard drive has failed completely, there are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cose you an arm and a leg for their services.

Studio XPS 9100 - I cannot access the internet from this computer consistently and shutting down takes 25 minutes

Always include the version of Windows in your posts.
Could have been a RAM problem if you got 4 beeps and you seem to have resolved that by reseating the modules. But the RAM error may have caused some corruption to a file on the hard drive.
Assuming the diagnostics pass, you can reboot and press F8 before Windows starts to load. Select Last Known Good. If that gets you to the desktop without errors, shut down normally and reboot normally, and you should be good to go.
You may also want to run chkdsk on the hard drive:
Click: Start>run
Type in: chkdsk C:
Click OK
Accept the offer to run chkdsk at next boot and then reboot. chkdsk will run before Windows loads. It may take a long time, depending on size of your hard drive, so be patient.

CHKDSK /r fails to complete to resolve Hard Drive Error 2000-0142 / 2000-0146

This is a regular problem on Win XP computers. They are old so the hard drive is also old. You may need to do a reinstall of your operating system. But you could try running RKill first it is a rootkit killer. This may find the problem in your software, but don't hold your breath, With chkdsk failing it is a reliable indicator of a physical failure on the hard disk. You need to consider that a hard disk is metal plates spinning very fast and while they are designed to take some knocks, over time a laptop takes more knocks than you would expect. The plain truth is, stuff breaks and need s replacing.

Unable to restore system of dell mini 10

Try to check your disk here is a link to explain using your installation windows disk
If you don't have a disk you can probably find one on the net or borrow one..
Start your computer press F11 start from the cdrom with disk in and press r for repair when prompt
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb491051.aspx

You can also try safe mode command prompt

You can also take the hard drive out and connect it to another computer as a second drive and run that computers command prompt.. Type CHKDSK (Your Drive: ) /F /R... on ..Example mine says CHKDSK D: /F /R press enter type Y for yes and enter don't turn off the computer.. when it is finished type EXIT and put HDD back in the another computer and start it

After run Malware bytes to remove the mal -ware that is freezing the computer...the link Here
If you can get the malware installed and ran in safe mode or connect
the drive to another computer and run it you won't need to chkdsk but checking the disk is good because if fixes bad sectors on the drive also files...Made my hard drive run smoother and makes no noise..

DELL STUDIO 1535 WILL NOT BOOT UP ERROR CODE 0146

That is a bad hard drive or sector in hard drive code. Try and run an FDISK on the drive or reformat the drive with your factory restore disk. If you are unable to format the hard drive replace it with a new one. That takes a SATA "serial ATA" hard drive. They are universal so any manufacture name replacement will work.

Hi just installed Windows XP Pro on a Dell Dimension 3000 with 1 gig RAM. This machine was running W2000 pro with no problems. But after formatting the drive and installing Windows XP pro and all updates...

Well you definately tried everything I would have sudgested.
It sounds like the Hard drive is near the end of its life.
If you have only just installed windows, it may be worth getting a new drive, installing your OS on that, you could then use the other drive as extra storage.
I have had a few HD that started to fail. Maybe the format and installation pushed it over the edge. You could always run maxtors drive check tool to see if it can detect a problem.( maxtor is now seagate)

Dell 530 won't boot up. Blue screen tells me I need to run CHKDSK /F. I can't get in anywhere to run it.

Try booting up in safe mode COMMAND PROMPT ....
Type CHKDSK /F
CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use Type Y and push enter it will start on the next startup...Restart the computer... If that doesn't work take the hard drive out and connect it to another computer and run it on that...

My computer starts but no hardrives found what is it >

It very well may be that the HDD (hard disk drive) has failed. If you are running windows, you can try running system repair or try chkdsk /r from the command prompt, both available on the windows disk; however you may need to take the machine to a qualified technician if you are not comfortable performing these tasks.

Message= block 20560772 uncorrectable data hard drive

Hello sicily0144,

One possible solution is to open a cmd window and type chkdsk /f.

• The cmd window can be accessed by clicking on Start and Run. Then type cmd and click ok*

• Type 'Y' (Yes) if the following message displays when running chkdsk /f :
"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)".

Chkdsk will try to fix the bad block problem when the computer is restarted.

If this solution is helpful please click a thumbs-up rating below.

Have a great day,

My dell inspiron 1525 has a memory write / read failure and i tried to reseat the memory and that did not work. Please help me

This could also be a problem with the hard disk. Part of the hard disk is usually used as a virtual memory. If the hard drive is defective, you could experience this kind of failure.
Check your hard disk drive using CHKDSK C: from a command line prompt. Check the outcome of this command. If you find any errors, run the command CHKDSK C: /F to fix the errors. Beware that the second command will prompt you to reboot your computer.

Desktop will not start.. will only go through Chkdsk

Try and tap F8 and see if you can boot to safe mode and go to my computer and rt click on C, and pick properties then tools, then
check for errors, and check auto, and scan.

Go to dell.com if you don't know who made the hard drive in your model. Then go to the mfg of the hard drive and download a hard drive diagnostic disk to check your hard drive for bad sectors.

You should go to dell.com and check your warranty and you can also ask dell what you should do.

This link posted below has a lot of drive mfg diagnostic tools.
