The best place to start is to have your transmission serviced...A dirty or clogged transmission filter will cause these problems.. I know this sounds dumb but check your fluid level...

n moving in drive, reverse or Low or 1? or 2? (me too lazy to look what tranny you have)
it can be 2 things
1: lack of engine power
2: bad clutch or transmission

who do we tell? easy
you step on gas , RPM goes way high and MPH dont. (slips)
tranny slip.
you step on gas, RPM tracks with MPH, good ,
you then do the 5second max. tranny stall test in every car FSM made. and see the stall speed, with brakes hard set.
too high is tranny slip
way to low, engine power POOR.

Transmission slips after engine warms up


It isn't when the engine gets hot, it is when the transmission fluid gets hot that the slipping starts, due to wear of the clutches and gears inside the transmission.
First, check the fluid level to make sure it is full. If it is low, bring fluid level to full and see if that helps.
About all the owner can do with slipping automatics is trying a transmission fluid and filter change to see if transmission revives and stops slipping. The bottom pan is removed, fluid (about 6-8 quarts) is drained, and a new filter is installed before the pan is replaced with a new gasket, sealed up, and fresh fluid added. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes the transmission is worn too bad to help, and you are left with looking for a replacement transmission.
Check the fluid level first. Good luck.

1996 F350 4x4 7.5l Shifts fine when cold. After 30-40 miles tranny sticks in 1st gear while accelarating from stop and will rev to 4500 RPM before slamming into third gear. If you let it rev to approx....


Changing the fluild ( all of it) might fix it if your lucky. Something overheating sounds possible. Any cooling system problem can cause this and cleaning the cooling system and flushing out the transmission cooler in the raditor may go a long way towards fixing your problem. dity raditor and or coolant will cause this problem. I you clean everything real good and then go and drive it and it goes longer but still does it your in for another rebuild. this time put in a new raditor to make sure the transmission lasted as long as it's supposed to. It's possible the throttle pressure was'nt set right and the trans upshifts too early and therefore the transmission gets too hot cause the engine is going too slow to make good transmission pressure and the slipping transmission overheats. again even after corrected it'll still do it as the transmission internal seals are adamaged by heat and it'll need to be rebuilt again.

Other than removing & cleaning the valve body

ANY SLIPPING EVER in the life of that trans,
will eventually lead to a rebuild

Most rear drive transmissions, last ten years & transaxles
are on their death beds from day one.

Unless you actually back probed the sensors with an oscilloscope
& scan tool data was next to non on OBD 1,it is possible
the sensors were never bad

if your d4 light started flashing, then that means a transmission sensor is failing, which causes your transmission to act funny.ill get back to you with a method on checking them and a list of codes to get you started, but dont go and ask for a new transmission. it might not be necessary.

TRANSMISSION SLIPS AND SHIFTS HARD, AUTOMATIC


Often the cause is low transmission fluid. Follow the instructions in your manual for checking it, because unlike checking your oil level, checking transmission fluid levels require that the vehicle is running.

Please, by no means do this check if you are uncomfortable doing it. Have a "gearhead" friend that you trust or a mechanic show you how.

Most manufacturers ask that you start the car, and while holding down the brake pedal, slowly shift through reverse and then all your forward gears, then place the car back in park.

Next (with the car running- CAREFUL!), find the transmission dipstick under the hood, pull it out, and wipe it off. Put the dipstick back in, pull it out and check the level. If it is low, you need to add some transmission fluid of the type specified by your manual into the dipstick hole (you will need an inexpensive transmission fill funnel), a little at a time, and keep checking it as described above until it is at the FULL mark.

It is important to note that the dipstick is marked FULL HOT (car is warmed up) and FULL COLD (car is NOT warmed up) because transmission fluid expands quite a bit and overfilling is bad for your tranny!

I own a Jeep with a Chrysler "straight six" engine (one of the best motors ever!) and my transmission slipped because of low fluid - I added a bottle of "transmission stop slip and stop leak" fluid to it and topped off the remainder with the proper type of transmission fluid, and now, seven months later, I do not lose any tranny fluid and it shifts great! The stop leak is more expensive, but IMHO it is worth the cost.

whens the last time the tranny was serviced as far as filter and fluid the tranny may not be getting enough line pressure if the filter is dirty, or low on fluid, cuasing the slippage

Slippy Tranny


Had the same problem. had the soiniod body changedbeginning of winter. Tranny shift Smoother but problem can back the next spring but less often then before.

Noticed that it was happening on hot day and after driving no more than an hour. Noticed that it was happening also in stop and go traffic.

Sometimes just putting the Tranny at Park and stopping the engine on a RED light fixes the problem.

I haven't gone back to the Tranny Shop.
