It depends on how you get your email, webmail through a browser like IE, Firefox, Chrome etc., or through an email client like Outlook, OE, Thunderbird, etc. And you might be connecting to gmail.com with an Android, iPhone, Kindle, etc. Whatever the case, you possibly need to change the settings to a POP3 server rather than IMAP. This page may help you set everything up correctly:

About IMAP IMAP stands for the Internet Message Access Protocol. It enables a mail client (such as Thunderbird) to access messages stored on a mail server. It is more modern and fully featured than POP (Post Office Protocol), which is the other major protocol for accessing mail messages. Most email providers now support IMAP. To see whether your account uses IMAP or POP, check the Server Settings page in the Account Settings... for more info.

Tip

IMAP or POP3?

Do you have an email address that you want to setup on an e-mail client like Outlook or in your newly bought mobile device like iPhone or Blackberry? And when you are about to do this you are asked to choose if you want to setup your email account via POP3 or IMAP? and you don't know what to choose? This tip will help know more about this two types of setting that are commonly used for email clients and mobile devices that supports messaging.

First of all let's talk about POP3, this stands for Post Office Protocol version 3. Yes, this is the latest version of this protocol. We won't really get too technical in this tip. I will just give you ideas on how this will work to better understand which one to choose between POP3 and IMAP. Now a days, if someone says "I POP my mails from the server" he/she is saying that he used POP3 to download mails from the server. POP3 was initially created for users who does not have a permanent access to the Internet, like dial-up. POP3 will download all of your mails from the server, delete the messages from the server, and close the connection. All of the message downloaded will all be store in inbox and even if the user is off line, the user can still check the downloaded messages without getting online.

**The server that we are talking about here is what we also call as web mail.

Though POP3 deletes all downloaded mails from the server (web mail). Most e-mail clients will give you an option to leave a copy of the message on the server. This will make sure that even if you "pop" you mails, once you log back in to your web mail the same messages are still in there. To make it short and simple POP3 will only download all of the message and put in to the inbox of your e-mail client or mobile devices.

IMAP or Internet Message Access Protocol. This protocol almost works the same as POP3. The only difference is that it will not download all messages from the server in to your inbox. IMAP is also called the "mirror" for your e-mail client and the server. What you will have on the server (web mail) will be available on the client or mobile device. This idea applies to this example. Let's say you have sorted your e-mails on your web mail, you created folders to categorize the messages that is getting to your inbox. Once you setup IMAP in a e-mail client or mobile device you will see the folders and you will also have an option on your e-mail client and mobile device to subscribe to these folders that you have on the web mail.

This is pretty much having the same format from the server to your e-mail client or mobile device. This will also save you from the agony of sorting your mails since they will show up on your e-mail client or mobile device same as how they are set on the server. Another thing that is not found in POP3 is the way messages will be removed the server. Once the user using IMAP deletes a message, it will not be immediately get deleted from the server unless the user explicitly delete them, this is done by using the purge option.

I hope this enlightened you a bit to choose between the two.

I am getting a message that says full IMAP support is not enabled for this account on a new godly email account I am setting up w secure server

Sounds like email incoming server setting problem. There are two type of Email server IMAP and POP . Maybe it needs to be set as POP for incoming email server setting rather than IMAP.
IMAP stores email messages on the email server where as POP only stores them until you download them to the email client program you are using on your device. You may have to check with email provider if it is using an IMAP server or if it is a POP server.

The issue that originally caused the error "imap.gmail.com is not responding" on several accounts has now been resolved, so I'm closing this thread since it's extremely long and most of the recent posts aren't related to the original issue. If you still have an issue with your IMAP connection, please feel free to start a new post. It will help if you an also include the following information so the community can help you troubleshoot.

  1. If you've upgraded to iOS, try removing and then recreating the account and that's been doing the trick.

  2. Try logging into your account through the web and make sure nothing is wrong with your username, password or general access.

  3. Double check your IMAP settings (servers, ports, etc): http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=75726&topic=1668961&ctx=topic

  4. Try removing and then recreating the account.

  5. Did you recently activity 2-step verification? If so, make sure you're entering the application specific password: http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=185833

  6. A good rule of thumb is that if you're having an IMAP issue on only one device or with one email client, then it's most likely settings and not an issue with your account. If you're getting the same error across devices and email clients (Apple Mail, iOS, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc), then it might be something else. If you only use one device/email client, try a second to help narrow down if it's just the settings.

Hope that helps!

Hotmail not receiving. Enable IMAP How?

Windows Live Mail is the desktop email application of Office Live, introduced with Windows 7. Windows Live Mail replaces Outlook Express in Windows XP and Windows Mail in Windows Vista. You can use Windows Live Mail to access most free email accounts, such as Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail, as well as those offered by Internet service providers. You can also set up your IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) account to use Windows Live Mail.

Open the Office Live email application. Click "Start," select "Programs" or "All Programs" and select "Windows Live Mail" from the "Windows Live Folder." Go to the "Tools" menu and select "Accounts" to open the "Accounts" dialog box. If you do not see thetoolbar, press the "Alt" key to display it. Click the "Add" button, select "Email Account" and click "Next." Type in the complete IMAP email address, such as "name@emailprovider.com" into the "Email Address." Enter the password for that account in the "Password" box. Enter the name you want displayed to email recipients in the "Display Name" box. Select the "Manually Configure Server Settings for Email" check box and click "Next." Select "IMAP" in the "My Incoming Mail Server Is" list. Enter "imap.ispname.com" into the "Incoming Server" box, replacing "ispname" with the name of your email provider. Type "smtp.ispname.com" into the "Outgoing Server" box, replacing "ispname" with the name of your email provider. Click "Next" and then click "Finish." Hope this helps.
