Question about Yamaha YPG-635 Portable Grand Piano

Open Question

Dead keys and/or multi-touch failure

My Yamaha YPG-635 keyboard's 88 keys all work when independently pressed. On a few keys, when one key is pressed and held down, the key next to it won't work. This happens for four separate sets of two-keys next to each other in random places across the whole keyboard. Is this a key or key contact failure or does a cable and/or board need to be replaced inside?

The problem is isolated to the E and F keys only throughout the entire 88-keys. Every set of E and F keys has an issue with multitouch. When the E key is held down, the F key won't work. Also, when the F key is held down, the E key won't work. All E and F keys work independently though.

SOURCE: Roland 3000 Digital Piano 88-Key Full-size weighted keyboard

It's not really for the faint of heart, but generally this is caused by gunk getting into the key circutry. Underlying the 3000's keyboard is a silicone pad with 2 contacts on it, the measurement between each being hit is the issue usually but yours just sounds like there's something in there causing a physical or contact obstruction.

What you really want to do is to remove the keys and clean everything but this isn't easy... You could try using 99% alcohol (from a pharmacy) to clean inside it which may well help you.

There's a good thread on a similar issue at:

http://www.electronicspoint.com/roland-hp-3000s-digital-piano-dodgy-note-t18946.html

Which may help you work out how to do the disassembly if you are brave, but I would start with pouring some alcohol in and poking it and hoping for the best 1st. It sounds crude, but it works amazingly well with some things.

No sound on one key

That's very annoying! The keys press on to a contact strip running the length of the keyboard. Over time this wears out and notes can either stop being dynamic or stop playing altogether. You can buy the strip off ebay and have a go replacing it yourself - not too expensive. I paid someone 50pounds to supply and fit one to a 61-note keyboard.

Dead keys yamaha psr e413 keyboard

Dead keys on Yamaha PSR e413 keyboard: Flip keyboard upside down, remove cover screws (use marked cardboard template to remember where they came out), spray suspect key-contacts with fast-drying contact cleaner, (usually a PCB with a matrix of contacts under keys), re-assemble base cover, wiggle faulty keys as far as possible to 'scrub' any dirt or oxidization. If this cleaning trick doesn't work, get a pro to check it.

YPG535 keyboard is touch sensitive though one key suddenly makes a hammering (hard) sound when touching softly (seems to have lost its touch sensitivity). Does anyone have any insights on this issue?

Yep! Each key has two contacts, These are often conductive rubber pills that are pressed by the keys onto circuit traces completing the circuit. One of the contacts makes before the other so the procesor can measure the time between the closure of the two contacts. When one of the contacts doesn't make, the velocity is sensed as MAXIMUM so it HAMMERS !!!

Your problem is a contact isn't making... Your probllem to fix it is to ACCESS the contacts to clean them. Clean the contacts with ONLY 99% isoprophyl alcohol and Q tips.
