Is the monitor not turning on completely? Did you try a different power socket? Disconnect from PC and try a self test to isolate the issue.

Come to work Monday (today) and turn on monintor , light up for a second and then off and now will not come on. Used another monitor on pc , no problem. This is the second monitor that did it to me.

is this a crt monitor or a lcd monitor? if it is a lcd monitor then your problem is a bad back light power inverter board and needs to be replaced. if it is a crt monitor then check the brightness and contrast controls on the crt monitor.
also check to make sure that the display are compatible with the crt monitor as well! meaning that if the crt monitor's max resolution is 1024x768 and your video card is set to a higher setting then you will get a blank screen with a sometimes green power light, maybe flashing. be very careful though because may also damage the crt monitor. also check your video card setting to make sure it is at 50 hz or 60 hz some crt monitors don't like the higher vertical refresh rate.
one last thing is the age of the crt monitor, it may be on its last leg of life. when i worked at a monitor repair center a few moons ago there was a life expectancy of maybe 30,000 hours(?) on a crt(note: it's been awhile so please don't quote me on this life expectancy!)
you may get eye strain with higher than 60hz range.

One line on screen

If the line is horrizontal then the fault is in the vertical deflection circuit.
It is not worth repairing an old CRT monitor, unless you have electronic knowledge. I do not recommend repairing CRT monitors yourself, because there are dangerous high voltages inside these monitors, even though the unit is unplugged from the main outlet. The CRT tube will hold high voltages for weeks even though the monitor is turned off.
I suggest you put your money towards a LCD screen, they are inexpensive.

Monitor won't come on right away

Sounds like the CRT is starting to go bad cause its taking longer and longer for it to boot up. CRT's aren't available now so a new monitor would be the only option.

Bright, thin line, in the middle of the screen, then...

1. I turn on the monitor, I hear a 'cracklin' sound
Reply: In a CRT Monitor there is a component called EHT which generates High voltage which is connected to the anode of the CRT, If there is any leakage due to moisture can cause this crackiling sound, You need to clean this high tension wire or replace the EHT ( CAUTION : BE AWARE OF HIGH VOLTAGES )

2. The screen only shows a bright, thin line.
Reply: The vertical Drive section of the monitor is faulty.

Nec 700 crt

Not a solution at all, but I'll post that I have a NEC MultiSync FE700 monitor that I purchased back in 2001, and have I been using the monitor since that time. Lately the monitor has been showing signs of 'acting up'. I read on the Internet that CRT monitors generally have a working life of about six years. It may be, depending on years of use, that the monitors are just reaching the end of their life.
