How to disable Autoplay of Audio CDs and USB Drives in windows

0b05cdf.png

All recent versions of widows contain features called AutoPlay and AutoRun. AutoPlay lets you choose which program to use to start different kinds of media, such as music CDs, or CDs or DVDs containing photos. For example, the first time you try to play a music CD, AutoPlay asks which media player you want to use, if you have more than one installed on your computer. You can change AutoPlay settings for each media type.Autorun is the technology used to start many programs or enhanced content (such as videos on a music CD) automatically when you insert a CD or USB drives into your computer. This is different from AutoPlay, but the result are the same, when inserted, the CD or USB drive starts automatically, using a particular program. Autorun is incorporated into the media types that use it, and you can't modify it.
When a disc is inserted or a drive is connected to your computer, Windows looks in the root directory of the disc or drive for a file named autorun.inf. If found, Windows executes the instructions in that file. ( whether it be start the music or install the virus.)
For example, an autorun.inf file on a CD might contain a line that reads open=setup.exe. This tells your computer to launch a setup program as soon as the CD is inserted into the drive

Removable USB/thumb drives use the Autorun feature to load files when the drives are plugged into the USB port. Malware exploits the Autorun feature to spread from thumb drive to PC. Disable the autorun feature to prevent malware from spreading.

For XP users:

1.Click Start and then click Run. Type gpedit.msc and click OK. The Group Policy window will open.

Disable AutoPlay in Windows Vista Windows Vista's AutoPlay options are a great...

Windows Vista's AutoPlay options are a great improvement over Windows XP in terms of flexibility, but unfortunately there are so many options that it can be confusing, especially since there's no specific mention of USB Flash drives in the options. Open your Control Panel, and then click on "Play CDs or other media automatically" to open the AutoPlay dialog. Disable AutoPlay Globally. The quickest way to disable AutoPlay entirely is to just uncheck the box for "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices", which should usually work.

The AutoPlay feature may not be turned on. To turn on AutoPlay, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom
  4. Double-click Autorun and see whether a zero or a one is displayed in the Value data box.
    • If the value for Autorun is 1, go to step 5.
    • If the value for Autorun is 0, right-click Autorun, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  5. Locate and then click the following subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
  6. Double-click NoDriveTypeAutoRun to see its value. If the value is 0xb5, the AutoRun feature for CD-ROMs is turned off. To turn on the AutoRun feature, follow these steps:
    1. Right-click NoDriveTypeAutoRun.
    2. Click Modify.
    3. In the Value data box, type 91.
    4. Select Hexadecimal, and then click OK.

Cause AutoPlay is a Windows XP feature. The AutoPlay setting may not be working properly in your Operating system. This situation is not the result of a faulty camera or FinePix Viewer software.
