Question about Kenmore 44072 Front Load Washer

Open Question

Dark grey smudges on clothes from a Kenmore front-load washer.

Hi, My Kenmore front loader washing machine is leaving dark grey smudges all over the washed clothes, sheets, towels, etc. These marks aren't in any noticable pattern - in some places, they're dark and heavy, but in others they're lighter and larger with a smeared appearance. As if that wasn't enough, sometimes a piece has a pattern of grey small round circles that matches the holes in the drum (as though dirty grey water was staining the item from the outside wall of the drum !) These marks all come out when washed in a laundromat washer.
The model number is 417.43042200.
I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

My machine is leaving grey lines on my clothes...not all in the load but some. they are random in length and not a straight line. I have cleaned out the drum and seal around the door to make sure it was not mold. I also used Affresh right before my last load and it is still doing this. I use powder for he machines.

SOURCE: Rust stains and bleach spots.

I'm sorry but the white spots will be due to bleach. It may be that there was undissolved bleach in the washer after the first load. Maybe some of it came out with the whites and lay in wait in the basket.

I doubt the makers would guarantee anything for 7 years, so no free basket or installation is likely. Seems there is a chip in the enamel and dampness / water from the previous wash days before sits there collecting iron as rust particles.

For the time being you could try rinsing the machine out before the first load. That might prevent the rust marks or reduce them.

The brown stains are likely coming from the felt drum seal. The OEM adhesive is tar based - and after time and use - breaks down.

You'll need a new felt seal - and the adhesive that is used should be silicone based... eliminating the brown streaks.

You will need to check in the first place the water inlet that connects the washer as if the pipes are rusted then it will be bringing to the washer some stains along with the rust . So allow the water to be collected and checked outside and then connected to the washer and checked.
next check on the sides of the tub /drum for any rusted parts or foreign objects that are lodged into the drum.
Finally make sure that the tub is clean, the vents and all the sections connected are brushed off with light vinegar and detergent.

Two possibilities come to mind. Too much fabric softener, or
the black rubber door seal. Try rubbing the seal with a paper
towel to see it it smudges. Try cleaning with bleach or alcohol,
then rinse it thoroughly with water.

Grey spots on our white clothes after wash

do you use affresh to clean your front loader? deposits of soap and other such things can be stuck around the inside tub of your washer. try this porduct out it works great on all front loaders use hot water with the affresh pellet with no clothes and run the machine through a cycle this also helps with any stagnant water smells also have you cleaned out your pump lately. * note remeber to put the pellet on the inside of the machine not in the soap dispenser

periodically this has happened in a white sheet wash in my kenmore front loader series 417. we ran the washer empty with washer cleaner and blackish water was ejected from the pump. Another site suggests mildew under the drum . I am wondering if some oil from the unit is leaking in on a high spin cycle where the load is too full.

Leaving brown/black smudges

This is most likely caused by laundry getting stuck in the front seal of the washer.

Kenmore washer leaves dark streaks on light colored clothes

I suggest you first take a clean, white cloth wetted with a stronger solvent such as 'Oops,' carburator or brake cleaner (with these two, DON"T overspray, they will damage plastic and paint) and wipe the drum inside to make sure there is not some gunk adhering that is gradually depositing itself with each wash cycle.
If you have a shade-tree mechanic in the family, they may have gotten a gob of grease on clothing that transfered to the inside of your machine.
If you don't find enough on the cloth to have caused the problem, I think you have lost a seal on the drum-side of the transmission.
