It goes fwd and back an inch or two while circling  and after a few minutes gives me 9 beeps

Does it ever stop and give you an error code? Do both wheels turn? Does it run forward in circles or backward in circles? (That is, does the bumper lead or follow?)

Try blowing out the unit, particularly the bumper, with compressed air. Clean off the little windows on the underside of the bumper-- these are the cliff sensors. Then, most importantly, tap the bumper with your hand about half a dozen times to knock loose anything that's stuck. If the issue persists, give a call to customer support and let them know you're having the 9-beep errror.

Roomba 560 goes in small circles like it is in "spot mode". Wheels are clean and push up and down and turn easily.

Its likely to be a sensor problem, Either the cliff sensors or one of the 3 wheel drop sensors are the most likely problem.

My Roomba 560 has started to run in small steps as if it constantly meets an obstacle and turns around in a very small circle. It advances slightly, backs slightly and turns and then does this again and...

It probably does think its met an obstacle. It could be the bump sensor switch remains pressed, one of the 4 cliff sensors on the front is dirty, or one of the 3 wheel drop sensors (left right and caster) is alarmed. Clean the sensors and your problem may resolve.

Roomba that is 6 years old has started spinning in

Sounds like it is stuck in the "spot clean" mode. Are you familiar with this command and sure that you are not pressing it? If so, there is not much else left to do as iRobot doesn't give much repair help. All they do is offer an upgrade to a more expensive robot.

I'm not sure which model of roomba you have, however you can try this diagnostic test to test all the parameter of the robot. follow the link and it'll guide you through the evaluation. http://mysite.verizon.net/gsplews/Diagnositic-Tests_Proc.v.0.5.htm

My roomba now just spins in circles in one spot. it does not go anywhere.

Try blowing out your bumper with compressed air. Tap the bumper with your hand to knock loose any obstructions. Then run your Roomba. If the behavior persists, the best way to resolve it is to call customer support. (The number should be in your documentation or on the bottom of the robot.)
