Question about Miele Coffee Makers & Espresso Machines

1 Answer

Miele CVA615 won't produce steam or hot water. Machine makes a mechanical noise like it's trying but no water comes out. The expel air indicator was on and this preceded discovery of the issue. Steamer had been working fine earlier.

Trey -
It sounds as if the water pump has gone bad. If the machine will not put water out of the hot water spout or the steam spout, and there is no water in the base of the machine (leaking from pump) then the pump is not putting out any pressure. The sound you hear is the pump running - but no pressure behind it.

Wanted to add - (was not clear if it had been performed) that the is only if the expell air process was performed with no result.

Thank you. I opened the unit and examined the hose from the reservoir to the pump, and there's a clear water valve in between that had what appeared to be lime deposits on the mesh filter in the valve. I tried to remove it but couldn't as the hose was stuck tight and I couldn't get to it very well. Anyway, after tapping it a little I put the unit back together and tried to expel air once more and it worked, and now the unit seems to function okay. I am concerned though that the problem will reoccur as we get the expel air more often. I wonder how I can tell if it's the pump not pumping good or a clogged filter?

The filter of course is a comsumable that can be changed out with a little persistance - But the descaling tablet should be cleaning this and the pump so this scenario doesnt become an issue. I have never seen a filter bad as to the point of clogging and causing expell air issues. However this is a 615 model and been in use for quite some time. the easiest solution would be to chamge the filter(I can order if you like) so you could start using a softer water - bottled spring water ect.

I'm probably to late for this answer, but I will share it anyway.
I got this problem after buying a used CVA620, that had not been used for a while.
To solve the problem i used a breast pump :-)
My wife had this doublepump after the last kid. And I used the hoses that comes with this unit (rubber-like) and connecting them to the hot-water and the steam-nozzles. I started pumping, and pushed the hotwaterbutton. After 5min of pumping and swearing, the job was done. No my CVA works as a charm again :-)

Problem with Miele CVA615 Espresso Machine Water

Frankly, there are things wrong that are beyond your scope, mainly because of the domino effect in small espresso machines no matter who makes them. There are multiple thermostats instead of a pressurestat, and on and on trying to replicate what a commercial machine does. In a machine like yours, the slightest failure of a gasket throws off everything. There is better containment of problems in commercial machines, but that too depends on what fails first.

My advice, if you are a home user, would be to get a manual pump machine , such as a Pavoni, (which I have lost respect for since they employed plastic pistons,) or if for a small cafe or bar, something like a semi-automatic job plumbed through a filter. Either way, in all honesty and that has cost me dearly, I warn you about this coffee business, because it is a science and an art.

It is not easy to make a good cup of coffee or espresso, especially.

My CVA620 machine asks to "expel air " but

keep holding the hot water button down until you get a steady stream of water with no air. if you continue to get the error message after the water comes out, you will need to check the flow meter. if water never comes out, you have a leak inside the machine, a pump issue, or a blockage in the water path. That machine uses the same pump for steam and hot water, so if your steam is working, your pump is probably good. Blockages usually occur from not descaling properly. That machine is prone to leak at the hose fittings. the original o rings were black rubber, and failed fairly early. the replacements are red silicone and last much longer.

Recently bought a house that has system CVA615. Hasn't been used a dozen times they said - so I cleaned per instructions. It now says "hot waster - expel air". Have done everything book said...

When selecting "Hot Water," can you hear a pump working (usually a strong buzzing sound)? If you do, then water path may be blocked or pump itself is jammed. A jammed water pump still makes buzzing sound. May be stuck from not using, for long period of time. Especially, in hard water areas.

I have a miele cva620 ind it displays expel air.. what shall i do? how can i do it?

FIll the water tank.

Turn the program selector to "ON with light" and place containers below the hot water dispenser and the steam nozzle.

Press the hot water button, turn the steam selector counterclockwise and let water run out until it streams steadily.

Press the hot water button again.
Turn the steam selector to "o" to shut off the water.

That should solve the problem

Expel Air

Expel air is a common problem, but if the manual's method doesn't work, it can mean only one thing, the pump is not working. You should hear the pulsing of the pump while in expel air mode. If not the pump or its circuit is suspect. The parts are SAECO and available without paying Miele's ridiculous markups.
