Question about Kenmore Dishwashers

Kenmore UltraWash (665.1384) won't start but lights are on

Kenmore UltraWash Model: 665.1384 3K603 Issue: The START button doesn't seem to do anything (unclear if the button is broken or something else but...) but other buttons do work (I can select a cycle and the light goes on for example, but the LOCK doesn't seem to be working). What I know: - there is no water in the unit - the float seems fine (has move left/right/up/down and is down right now) - the cycle buttons (like light wash, normal wash, etc...) turn on when pressed, everything almost seems normal up to this point - after ~30 seconds all ON lights turn off automatically (so I press "Normal Wash" and the light & "Heated Dry" light go on, if I just leave it they both go off after ~30 seconds, no clue if this is normal or not, had never noticed it before if it was) - none of the lights are blinking ever What I have tried so far: - the key sequence to try a diagnostic (Normal Wash -> Heated dry x5, Normal Wash -> Pots&Pans x5) don't seem to do anything - flipped the breaker (off/5mins/on) and when I closed the door it did something (smelled really bad) for like 1-2minutes (made noise like something in there was working) but no clue what (inside doesn't seem to have changed, not wet, etc...), no lights flashed during the process, and then returns to the same state - holding the Heated Dry for long times (lock/unlock) doesn't seem to have any effect at all (thought maybe it was locked, tried to toggle, etc...) but there is no lock-light on - took apart the control board somewhat (easy connectors, etc...), didn't touch the fuse thing or most of the connectors along the top. Didn't help, same exact behavior when I put it back together. My question: - I would like to get to the actual START button (maybe there is something there) but I don't see how to open the control panel to get there, is this something we are not supposed to do? Is it sealed? Would I be able to do anything even if I did open it? - Could it be that I am using the wrong SEQUENCE to try to kick-off a diagnostic? - Is it possible it is the fuse? I see a lot of posts about replacing and testing it but if the unit is getting some power then I assume it cannot be that right (just want to eliminate that possibility) Aside from that I am out of ideas of what to do (DIY), I guess the next step would be to order replacement parts, but what is more likely to be the issue? The control panel (where the buttons are) or the main control board... together they cost over 200$ for a 3-year old $350 dishwasher I am wondering ... Can the parts be ordered, tried, and returned if they didn't solve the problem (anyone ever had to deal with this?). Any ideas of tests I could run, things I could check, most likely problem, etc... anything help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks,

This could be the door switch that is bad or loose. Check that first. Then you are looking at doing some troubleshooting. The first thing is to see if there is a technicians sheet attached to that machine under the kick panel. If there is then you have something to use for performing tests. One of the tests most likely is to unhook the control panel from the control board and power it on. If you hear the pump come on for about 5 seconds, the control panel is bad.

Found the technicians sheet (thanks!) but the diagnostic test (when run correctly) doesn't happen, the lights go on when I press the buttons but nothing happens. Also I unplugged P1 (that is what you meant right) and turned the breaker back on and I hear a CLICK when the power comes back but nothing happens, what sound am I expecting the pump to make? Recall there is no water in the unit.

Also how do I check the door switch? I mean it seems to close, I hear the click and I can't open it without the switch being pressed, wouldn't I get an LED or something if this was the issue? Is there a way to check and exclude it as a possibility?

I believe those machines are made by Whirlpool and are pretty good machines. With the ribbon cable unhooked from the control panel and the door closed, have someone turn the power back on. You should hear the pump hum for 5 seconds or so. If it does then the control panel is bad. If it does not then the controller is bad.

Sounds like a controller issue then, because I switch the power off/on and I hear a CLICK but nothing actually happens. I'll order the part ($200), just worried because if it is not I cannot return it...

Hi-Temp Wash, Hi-Temp Rinse, or Sanitize options.
Some models have options that may require a water heating delay, such as Hi-Temp Wash, Hi-Temp Rinse, or Sanitize. Additional time may be required to heat the water to the proper temperature. The dishwasher will continue to circulate water during this heating delay but the timer will not advance until the proper temperature is reached

SOURCE: I have a Kenmore Elite ULTRA WASH Dishwasher

This issue appears due to stuck keys on control keypad or due to moisture/shorted connections on the keypad. Sometimes this appears when the door is not closed or door lock switch is failing. Turn off the power to dishwasher, unplug the power cable from outlet or shut off the breaker. Use a multimeter and make sure that the connection to door switch assembly are fine, also check the continuity of the door swiches (when closed). If continuity is present you would need to check the connections to the keypad. Try disconnecting the P1 connector(connects keypad to control board) and then reconnecting it, check if the problem is still present. Replace the keypad if the problem still appears. Please check the below pictures, they might help you--

SOURCE: Found cycle not finished, water

First make sure that nothing is blocking the drain pump assembly located inside the lower front panel of the dishwasher. If the issue returns after its cleaned then it means that the control board has gone bad and should be replaced. Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

Check that the door is closing all the way and that the latch isn't damaged or bent. It sounds like a door switch issue.

I think you still have warranty, it sounds you have faulty control panel, even if it's new does not mean it is good.

My kenmore elite ultrawash dishwasher, model # 665.16289402, will not start. The green clean light keeps blinking and when you go to push start after selecting which wash program it does nothing.

youll need to enter a diagnistic mode, press in this order, hi-temp(sani-rinse)----heated dry--hitemp---heated dry... all lights should light, close door and let cycle for about a min, htne press the cancelbutton, you should be good to go, the buttons on your model may read slighty different names, if this "toggle of buttons" does not work, you can remove thelower access panel and htere willl be a tech sheet/trouble shoooter behind the panel, in there it will explain how to enter diag/test mode
