Question about GE JVM1653 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

GE JVM1653 Shuts off!

I cannot believe I have the same problem.  My GE JVM1653SH shuts down after 3 seconds!  I have disconnected the powerboard and have it hanging at a 45 degree angle.  Now it works.

Isn't there anything we can do to speak as one voice.  I was bullied on the phone at GE yesterday by Peggy Martinez.  Wouldn't help me and said she has never heard of this problem before.

We work too hard for our money to let GE get away with this.  Any suggestions for organizing ourselves?

Have had and still have the same problem. I tried having repairman fix it under my extended warranty and they have had no success. The GE repairman are fair at best.

GE JVM1653SH03 Shuts off after 3 seconds.

My customer has had the microwave for about 2-3 years and problems have followed thru its lifetime. I replaced PCB board and still trouble. It starts it's countdown, gets to 58 seconds, blacks out display, and comes back on like someone unplugged microwave.

My microwave does the same thing. I turn it on and after 3 seconds shuts off and turns on like I had just plugged it in. I reprogram, date, time, and year and it does it again.

This is a due to a defective or possibly loose magnetron.

If yours has loose mounting nuts / bolts or the wire mesh RF gasket was not installed or got pinched, that can also cause this RF leakage interference inside the oven.

It may also need a new high-voltage diode and stirrer, and the cavity may be affected.

GE had a campaign (but not a recall!) covering several models.

Details are in their bulletin at http://207.234.249.73/mwd/ge_mw_mag_kit_bulletin.pdf

The parts kit (that GE used to pay for) is part # WB27X10489 and is shown in the photo below.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Stops after 4 mins

Can you hear the "whirl" of the fan? It is possible the fan is not turning & cooling the oven therefore it will shut down when it reaches a certain temperature. This could be caused by a supply fault to the fan or the fan motor, either way it would need to be tested by a qulified engineer.

My JVM1653 loses power after 3 minutes of heating

it may have been the hi voltage at the magnetron, but the shut down is your heat thermocouple mounted on the magnetron side and when the mag overheats this thermocouple opens up and shuts off power to the mag to prevent overheating and fire

Ge microwave oven - JVM1653SH shuts off

Sadly, we hear of this over and over.

This is due to a defective or loose magnetron causing electrical interference and disruption in the control circuit board.

If your magnetron was recently replaced, it may have loose mounting nuts or bolts or maybe the wire mesh RF gasket was not installed or got pinched.

It may also need a new high-voltage diode and stirrer, and the cavity may be affected.

Details are in their bulletin here. Even if your model is not on the list, the same problem can occur, requiring a kit. The parts kit is similar to this one.

(Your model may use a different kit - this is shown for illustration purposes only).

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

They may send you a replacement magnetron. GE Customer Service is here.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

JVM 2070 shuts off

My unit does the same thing - it will often simply power down or power down and display garbage on the control panel within a second or two of starting operation.  I have found in my case this seems related to slight obstruction preventing the exhaust hood from pivoting to the open position at the top of the unit.  Mechanical misalignment of the pivoting fan panel seems to cause a motor overdraw, or something similar, which shuts down the unit.  I've found that I can usually slide the pivoting fan panel a mm or so to the right or left, usually right (oddly), and then the panel will swivel unimpeded and the microwave will work.  As my unit has cabinets above it, I believe that over time there has been sufficient physical contact/impact with the pivoting exhaust panel to slightly deform it, affecting its ability to freely rotate down from the vertical.
