Common problem with those laptops is that the graphics chip over heats and causes the solder points to crack thus giving a blank screen.

It is as a result of Compaq/HP trying to save a few pennys and using a cheap method of attaching the chip. It is possible to fix it temporary but it would only last a few weeks before it goes again.

SOURCE: my laptop is hp compaq

1) First check the Display to make sure this isn't the problem.

Laptop on shine a flashlight at the LCD screen, and various angles.
Do you see faint images?

Do you have a VGA monitor available? (Also referred to as a CRT. Resembles a small TV)
If so, laptop off plug the VGA monitor into the VGA connector on the Left side of the laptop.
(Typical VGA connector,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SVGA_port.jpg )

Turn the VGA monitor on, and let it power up. Once the VGA monitor is powered up turn the laptop on.
Is there a display on the VGA monitor?

If not press and hold down on the Fn key, then tap the F4 key.
This action should toggle your display over to an external monitor.

Yes? You have a display on the external (VGA) monitor?

Then you have a problem with the Backlight, or the Inverter.

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is used as an additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.
(Typical size is 3 to 5 inches long, and half the diameter of a No.2 pencil.
A Backlight is located within the metal framework holding the LCD layers together, and is on one edge of those layers. {An LCD screen is composed of layers)

An Inverter is used to provide power from the laptop for the LCD screen, and the Backlight.
90 percent of the time the problem is the Inverter.

An Inverter is a small circuit board located within the Display Assembly. Behind the Bezel of the Display Assembly, and located usually at the bottom of the LCD screen.
(The Bezel is the thin plastic frame that surrounds the LCD screen in the front)

Typical example of an Inverter for an HP Compaq 6735S,

http://www.impactcomputers.com/494116-001.html

The Display Assembly needs to be removed from the laptop, in order to remove the Bezel, and gain access to the Inverter.
Pictorial guide of how to remove the Display Assembly,

http://www.insidemylaptop.com/disassemble-hp-compaq-6730s-6735s-notebook-remove-cooling-fan/

Follow Steps 1 through 7.

This pictorial guide shows how to remove the Bezel. The guide is for replacing a webcam module.
Disregard removing the webcam module, and follow the other steps.

2) If NO display is shown on the external monitor you have a graphic chipset problem.
This requires replacement of the motherboard.

Chip and Chipset are slang terms to mean I.C.
Integrated Circuit.

The graphics chip is mounted to the motherboard with a BGA surface mount. (Ball Grid Array)
Having the chip removed and replaced is more expensive than replacing the motherboard.

This is the download page for the Service Manual (Free) from HP Support,

Under the heading > Service and maintenance information, click on the file name,

HP Compaq 6730S and 6735S Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide.

This is a PDF file.
Usually takes 2 to 5 seconds to see the first page come up, and additional time for the file to fully download.
Suggest you let the file download all the way before looking through it.

SOURCE: How do you reset the power on password on a Compaq

You need to take out the RTC battery. First, unplug the computer, next remove the large battery, finally do the following

1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (above)
2. Remove the memory/Mini PCI module compartment cover
3. Remove the Mini PCI communications module
4. Remove the RTC battery from the socket on the
system board.
5. Removing the RTC Battery for 10 minutes
Reverse the above procedure to install an RTC battery.

Removing the RTC battery resets the BIOS which resets the password.

Hp compaq 7620s wont start ( constant blinking blue light )

The adapter output appears correct, the batteries often work in that voltage range. But the problem you have is the motherboard, the HP line has constant trouble with the main board, only option is board replacement.

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow myinstructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

sounds like your DC coonector came loose from the system board.it is a common problem with laptops,

Problem symptoms:

  1. Laptop randomly shuts down without any warning.
  2. Power LED and battery charge LED start flickering when you wiggle the power cord or the AC adapter tip on the back or your laptop.
  3. The battery will not get charged.
  4. When you plug AC adapter, the laptop appears to be dead and there is no LED activity at all (DC-IN jack on the system board is broken).
here is how to repair:

Go to the HP website and see if your machine is one of the many that compaq and hp are having those kind of issues with.My wife just had to send her machine in for a system board repalcement. They are offering a free one time fix for certain problems. Yours sounds like the same on my wife had. It took about 21/2 weeks from initial contact with tech support to fed ex dropping off fixed machine. Hope this helps. If it does please rate this answer.
