Scanner failure When try to scan or fax from my feeder and from the flat bed it sounds as if the motor revs real high and stops. then 'Scanner failure' message comes up where I have to turn off the unit then back on. I am out of warranty, not by much, and HP had me to a semi-reset but did not work. I can copy from the flatbed but not fax from flatbed. Brian

Another option is to get checked by a non-H.P technician (as it is already out of wtty), he might be able to fix it at nominal cost.

If nothing.....get a new one......

ok, chances are there are some gears/belts/rollers slipping, or the drive motor in the feeder is dying.  If it's a hardware issue, you should be able to scan, fax, or copy from the flatbed.  If not, you may have software issues or system board issues.  Try reinstalling the software on your PC, that might help the scanning issues.

Unfortunately, it's expensive to repair these machines, and HP is more than happy to sell you a replacement opposed to repairing yours.

If it's a necessity to use the feeder, I would consider a new machine, since the refurbs from HP only have a 90 day warranty.

    It's a place to start....

I have a Epson cx11 and get a black vertical line down the middle of scans and copies

Check your flat bed and Document feeder scanning glass need to be clean, if any dot or dust in scanning glass of document feeder it will appear a line, check this points first
1- Check printouts from computer or FAX if it is clean problem in scanning section
2- Check using Copying a blank paper using only Flatbed if it prints without any line its problem from document feeder Scanning glass
So solution is clean the Document feeder scanning glass using wet cloth, note careful about wet cloth switch off the machine and clean it

When I am faxing to someone my outgoing fax comes through with a line running down the middle. How can I fix this?

Hi. Try to open the cover for the scanner bed. You'll see 1 big glass and 1 small strip of glass on the left side. The big glass is used for scanning using the scanner bed. The small strip is used when paper is going through the feeder. Wipe the glasses thoroughly with a soft cloth. Hope it's just a dirt that's causing the problem. Good luck!

Brother MFC 8440 Automatic Document Feeder doesent feed

Could be a sensor in the ADF, or the hinge on the left rear of the scanner cover is broken.

HP Officejet Pro L7680 All in One - cannot send faxes - keeps jamming and says "scanner failure unable to scan copy or send a fax. Turn the power off and on and try again" I have done this several times...

The scanner is the problem, the scanner is the real bright light that comes on to scan the orginal document. Does your Scanner lamp come on? mite be burned out? stating scanner failure, doses your scanner move when it scannes the document? Motor or cicruit board that control scanner mite be bad, check the scanner "Home " position sensor maybe the scanner board and main board don't know where the scanner is phyiscal when it goes thur its routine.

Hello, I have an HP OfficeJet 7310 all-in-one print/scanner/fax etc. I purchased about two years ago but don't use very often. Yesterday while I was trying to send a fax I received a loud winding-up...

I have same problem! The copy/scan function would feed the orginal from the ADF halfway and instead of making a normal loud feeding noise it made a horriable alarming sound and displayed an error message. To fix it: I waited a day or two and bang the top of the feeder cover with normal force while the original is feeding. It appeared the problem is resolved. I have no idea what the problem is, however I think if this work for few months at a time is fine by me.

Hp officejet 7410 fax failure

Had the same problem as everyone else here - would copy fine but faxing or scanning resulted in the "whizzzzzz" sound (with or without the sheet feeder) and a mandatory reboot.
I followed the suggestion of moving the scanner head to a different part of the drive belt and it works fine now (at least until that part of the belt wears down!). Here was the procedure - it took about 10 minutes.
  1. Remove all T8 screws from the top of the scanner bed - there are two hidden on the left side under the removable flap and two more hidden behind the front control panel cover, which just snaps off.
  2. There is a bundle of wires that prevents the entire top from lifting completely off, so lift it high enough to clear the plastic parts, then rotate it 180 degrees around and set it on something to support it.
  3. Lift the scanner head until it comes off the guide rod and disengages from the drive belt.
  4. Move the scanner head to the other end of the bed and reingage it onto the belt and guide rod - this is a little tricky to get the belt to pop back into the scanner head, but I got it to go by holding the belt firmly on either side of the head and squeezing both together.
  5. Replace top and all screws, pop control panel cover back into place.
  6. Rejoice in saving yourself lots of $$ and preventing more junk from entering the landfill!

Scanner not working

A6 is a scan failure detection.

This sounds to me like the motor running the scanner is not working. However, there are three or four causes of this error. The home position sensor, the motor, the CCD, the main board and the engine board.

You should be able to find the sensor that detects the scanner lid. Fool it with a piece of tape or a finger. Look at the scanner after pressing copy to see what is happening.
You could open up the scanner and check the movement to make sure it's smoth, but this is a lot of work. The best option is to pick up a used scanner from a Brother service centre. Install it and see if it solves your problem. Of course, you wouldn't be able to return it if it did not solve the fault. This is why Brother recommended you take it to a service centre, the troubleshooting is very in-depth for a fault of this nature.

Officejet 7310: Scanner Failure

If you get a "Scanner failure" message then the problem is the motor itself. Notice how the motor works fine when the scanner is moving slowly, like copies or faxing with the original laid on the glass. HOWEVER, the scanner failure comes up when you use the automatic document feeder on top. Why? Because the scanner assembly has to move to the other side of the printer at high speed to get into position, and it's the high speed movement that triggers the error on the printer. The motor is expensive, part number Q3450-60003. Many other models use the same motor, maybe you could find one cheap somewhere and swap the motor?
