Try to charge the batterie. If you already did charge, it could be the battery does not have enough capacity anymore and you should buy another one. Please if you have not used the camera for a long time, try charging the battery several times, till the charger says it is full and then use the battery. Sometimes you could revive the battery this way. If not buy a new one.

Take a picture with the new battery pack. Is the picture also blank? Are the menu selections still visible in the LCD? Have you tried pressing the DISP button on the back, but the screen still remains blank?
If the answer is yes to these three questions, this sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

Testimonial: "Very helpful"

Happened the same with mine. At the beginning I tough it was related with the sd card as when I removed the card the camera would turn ON. Later on I found it to be related with the camera contacts. After cleaning the battery contacts with alcohol and a cotton swab it started to work fine. SOLUTION: Clean battery gold contacts.
