Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Vulcan cx90 My central heating has been working fine all year. Last night it was a bit cold, so I turned on the wall thermostat .... and nothing. Usually the fan starts blowing heat within a minute of turning up the temperature, but nothing happened. I have turned everything off and relit the pilot light. And still nothing. Any ideas as to what may be wrong ?

If you have a newer style programmable thermostat there are batteries in the thermostat that need replacing. Otherwise look at the thermostat wiring. If you have a voltmeter. check for 24 volts ac on the terminal with the red wire and the one marked C. If no voltage is there either a fuse is bad or the 24 volt control transformer is bad.

SOURCE: arcoair central heat /air conditioning unit

The blower motor kicks on when there has been a 24 volt control failure.

This usually means that a limit switch has tripped.

Most likely that would be a high temp limit switch or a rollout switch.

First, make sure the filters are clean. and the evap coil is clean. If eaither are dirty/clogged, it will partially block airflow, causing the furnace to overheat, causing the high temp limit to trip.

A rollout switch typically trips for three reasons.
1 flame rollout into the burner compartment due to poor airflow.
2 overheating af teh metal plate the rollout is mounted to, due to dirty, old, rusted components.
3 a bad limit switch.

If your unit has an LED light, count the flashes and it will hepl popint out the problem.
(locate the wiring diagram/flash code list, and correspond the flash count, with the code.)

First, check filters.

check the thermostat setting on back for electric heat. sounds like it is on gas heat. the fan should turn on right away if it is electric or heat pump.

My Baxi Combi 80e boiler turns the heating on randomly. With the wall thermostat turned down and even with the boil switched to hot water only the heating still fires up when unwanted.

If the thermostat wire run passes anywhere through, beside or inside any metal surfaces and the wires touch any of the metal its the same as if you turn the stat to on. I've seen this a few times. Easiet way to detect it, if its inside the house is at night in the dark. Look around when its doing this you may see the small spark when it goes on. Otherwise you will need to inspect the entire run from the stat to the untis, etc.

I had a vulcan central heating unit that was made in 1990. Could you please tell me what the model number is on a 1990 vulcan central heating unit. Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob, The number you have listed AUW230A may be the model number. You say its a central heat so, If it is a package unit, the model, serial, and all of the ratings would be on the unit near the elect box on a package unit.I do know by the # you gave me it is a Vulcan 3000 watt thermostatically controlled Immersion heater. Here is a link I can give you, they deal with this heater for parts Ect. that maybe of help to you, it is www.grainger.com. There are many model # and I believe this is it, AUW230A. I hope this helps Rob, Sincerely,

Thermostat wont work

Go down to your heater and find the thermostat wires. there should only be 2 wires connected, One will be connected to R and the other to W match them to RH and W on the thermostat. The jumper will not matter.
