Your camera only can use SD cards. The SDHC is a newer generation of SD cards, that need a different protocol you access the files. The newest version is the SDXC version.
SD cards never exceed 4 Gbyte. The SDHC never are bigger than 32 GD and the SDXC are over 32 GByte.
When you try to buy a SD card, the biggest you will find will be 2 GByte. I own 2 SD cards that have 4 GByte, but even I can't find them on the net any more.
The cards are from Platinum. But I even can't guaranty you the 4Gbyte will work in your camera.

Some firms used to bring out new firmware, as soon as the SDHC cards came out. I succeeded to update my TomTom to SDHC and the old thing now even accepts 16 GByte cards. But Canon did not offer an upgrade for the V550, so you stay stuck to the normal SD cards.

the A550 manual says SDHC cards can be used, as well as multimedia cards.

  • Harrie Dec 31, 2013

Can you tell me what page in the manual. Please I have the english manual. The multimedia cards have the max capacity of 4 GByte and a very low access time.

  • Harrie Jan 02, 2014

You are right, the first time I did not see it could use SDHC. The manual does not mention how many megabytes. It should be 32Gbyte with SDHC. There can be lots of other reasons why you have an error. Try to format the card in a PC with FAT 32 and then give it a low level format in the camera. Make sure your battery is fully charged, because it can take some minutes to do so. Make sure the lock switch is in the right position (unlocked) and all contacts on the card and in the camera must be clean and shiny. Success.

I will try the format to fat 32 once and let you know how it goes!

  • Harrie Jan 03, 2014

Even if you have trouble formatting the card in your PC, try to format it in the camera. But in the camera give it a low level format. And don't forget to charge the battery before you do so.

Check to see if your 16GB card is an SDHC card. If it is, your camera is not compatible with SDHC. (The SDHC protocol was developed after the SD300 came out in 2004).

SOURCE: ixus 40 maximum SDHC card

Your camera is not compatible with SDHC type cards. No 4gb cards for you. It looks like 2gb (non SDHC) cards are the biggest you can use.

SOURCE: Canon PowerShot SD 630 Digital Elph "Memory Card Error"

Hi,
I'm sorry to tell that PowerShot SD 630 does not support SDHC cards over 2 gig.
If you want the camera to take a card over 2 gig then you are stuck standard SD cards.
The other camera does support the card because it's a higher model.

Regards.

I am getting memory card error with canon powershot a410

The A410 works with SD cards. Your 8GB card is an SDHC card and won't work in devices not designed to use them. You need to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Can I use 8GB SD cards in my Canon Powershot A620 camera? I thought I once read that it will only support up to 2GB SD cards.

The A620 uses MMC and SD cards. SD cards max out at 2GB in size. Larger cards are actually SDHC or SDXC cards and will not work in the A620.

I want to know maximum card (SD and SDHC) that can be used with Canon Power A550 Camera.

The maximum size of SD cards you can use is 2GB since SD cards max out there. SDHC cards max out at 32GB. The camera itself does not impose any limits on those two types. In short, you can use any SD/SDHC card.

Will the canon ixus 30 use a 8GB SDHC memory card, as it shows card locked in display

Your camera will accept a maximum SD card capacity of 2GB. It simply isn't capable of handling anything of a larger capacity and in particular is incompatible with the more technically advanced SDHC cards.

Your fix is to either replace your camera with a later model or to stick to using SD cards with a maximum 2GB capacity.

Why can't I get pictures off of an 8gb but I can off of a 2gb chip?

Some cameras cant manage/format large size memory cards as they where not made to handle that size. Check your user manual which should tell you the maximum size memory card your camera will take.

Some digital cameras can handle large memory cards as they are unable to format or manage that size of memory. Check your user manual which will tell you the maximun size allowed.

Card error

Your camera was designed (2004) and manufactured (mostly 2005) before current generation SDHC cards became available. It will therefore be incompatible at the basic hardware level. There were some non-standard SDHC cards around in 2006 but your camera was never designed for those either.

Stick to regular SD cards, in theory your camera can handle 4GB maximum but the design team wouldn't have been able to certify compliance with that size of card as they also weren't available at the time. To be safe, stick regular SD cards with a 2GB maximum capacity.

Sorry there's no way for you to use your SDHC with your present camera but at least I hop that I've prevented you from wasting time and money on buying another incorrect memory card.

The camera you are using supports those cards: SD Memory Card, MultiMediaCard. Maximum size of SD card is 2.0GB anything over that is SDHC. So I would say the card is not supported by your camera.

Sorry for the extreme delay in answering your question: I've been trawling for old unanswered questions today and yours came up. The following answer will undoubtedly be way too late to be of use to you, but may assist others searching FixYa for an answer to the same problem.

You have been mistaking SD cards for SDHC cards. They look the same but are different, and your camera cannot use SDHC cards as it was designed before they existed. The limitation is due to the hardware in your camera so it cannot be updated to SDHC standards.

Your 2GB card was definitely an SD card as SDHC cards have a minimum capacity of 4GB, and 2GB SD cards are the maximum capacity which your camera can handle. Your only fix is to either stick to 2GB maximum capacity SD cards or to replace the camera with one which is SDHC compatible.
