Most likely, this is a hardware problem rather than a software one. While viruses and malware can cause oddities in keyboard and mice behavior, what both of you are describing appears to be due to the actual keys. On most laptops, except for more recent versions, the keyboard is one "unit". That is, if you were to pull off all of the keys on a keyboard, you would find that it is really just a series of buttons next to each other without physical separation between them. This means that it is quite possible to get solid or liquid debris (dust, dirt, food, etc.) into the cracks in between the keys. Over time this can accumulate to the point where nearby keys can get stuck together in such a way that when one key is pushed, the others also activate. To remedy this, I would purchase some cleaning fluid at any computer/electronics store (be sure to look for ones that are approved for use on laptop keyboards), a can of compressed air may also be useful, although it is possible that it would make the problem worse.
When the computer is turned off, apply the cleaning fluid and either make use of the compressed air or a vacuum cleaner near the problem keys. For maximum benefit, you can attempt to remove some of the keys to further get at any debris. After this, let the computer sit for a while (if you have used a liquid cleaning fluid) to be sure that it is completely dry. Restart the computer and see if the problem has resolved itself. Repeat if necessary.
