Also you may want your parents to to get special software that will filter the internet from bad sites.

If they need expert advise tell them to go to www.pc-fix.us

What it does is you plug it into the PC, (yours) then it will act as a wireless card. BUt you say yours doesnt go that far, so this one may be stronger then the one built into your PC already.

It doesnt do anything for the router, this is just used to get wireless internet.

Wireless adapters are for people who don't have wireless cards, or built in wireless cards. This plugs into a USB port on your PC, and go from there.

Remember you will need to install the driver that comes with it.

You will need to get a wireless USB network adapter. The cost starts at 39$..You will get a good one for abt 50$.Next contact a wireless internet  service provider...And he will have it setup for you .This is easy to use and after using it you can just disconnect the USB device and keep it out of reach of your brother..

Is it possible to connect a standard DSL modem - without Wi-Fi (with 1 Ethernet port) and a DSL modem - Wi-Fi (with 4 Ethernet port) to broadcast Wi-Fi singles

Does the non wifi modem give out DHCP addresses?
Can the wifi modem be set up to receive it's IP address from DHCP?
If the answer to both these questions is Yes then that's what to do as a first step. Make sure the wifi modem DHCP service is disabled as it must NOT give out DHCP addresses.
Connect the ethernet port of the non wifi modem to one of the LAN ports of the wifi modem and NOT the DSL/WAN port. The wifi modem is not participating in any DSL connectivity at all so it's DSL light will remain off. The non wifi modem is doing the DSL duty so it's DSL light should be correctly illuminated.

I HAAAAAVE A AT@T WESTELL MODEN BUT MY COMPUTER IS NOT WIRELESS BUT I HAVE WIFI ON MY ACCOUNT. I AM THINKING ABOUT GETTING A SYLVANIA NETBOOK WHICH IS WIRELESS. WILL IT WORK IN MY HOME . THANK YOU

Let me clear up a little confusion. You don't have wi-fi on your account, you have Internet access. Wi-fi is not something that you subscribe to or purchase separately. Wi-fi (wireless) access is provided by a router that allows the Internet connection you pay for to be shared by several computers. The typical router has both wired connections (usually 4 of them) for computers that don't have wireless capability, and acts as the access point for your wireless network.

Your modem is the device that connects you to the Internet through your service provider (ISP). Most ISPs are supplying a combination modem/router for their customers since so many people want wireless access in their homes. If you have one of these, you actually have wireless capability already. But your modem might be an older type, supplying a single wired connection for one computer only. You didn't give the model number of your Westell modem so I can't tell you what you have, but you can tell by looking at it.

A single-connection DSL modem will have only two ports. One is the connection to the DSL phone line, and is a standard-size phone jack labeled "DSL". The other is the network cable connection to your computer, usually labeled "COMPUTER", "LAN" (short for Local Area Network), or "ETHERNET" which is the type of cable used. If this describes your modem, you will need to provide your own wireless router to make your new wireless netbook work.

On the other hand, a combination modem/router will have the DSL connection jack and 4 connectors for computers. It may also have an antenna for the wireless function, but some newer models have internal antennas. If you have one of these, you already have wi-fi capability. You will probably need to set up your network so that your netbook can use it.

There is plenty of information available about how to install a wireless router if you don't have one already. In fact, almost every one now comes with an installation CD that will guide you through all the steps. They aren't expensive and are for sale almost everywhere that sells electronics (office places, Radio Shack, retailers like Wal-Mart, etc.). If you already have the combination device, you can call your ISP customer service for help in setting up your network, or find the information on their website.

So yes, the Sylvania netbook will work in your home, although you may need to do a little work first. But it's really pretty simple, and you'll have that computer online without wires in no time.

Lap top will not conect to the wireless internet connection

If you are on a laptop: (windows)
1. check to make sure your physical on off switch for the wireless card is turned on. Windows will sometimes still show it as being active while the switch is physically still off.
2. Disable/re inable the software connection to the wi fi

(MAC) Disable reinable the wireless card in dropdown menu

3. restart the wi fi router

I have a d-link router for my laptop and my wireless has worked fine until abotu a month ago my wireless just stopped working, it says that i have full strength connection like all the bars are showing...

this is a DSL router I think
Try pulling the power to the DSL Dlink wi fi router.
For 30 seconds then plug in back in and switch it on again.
If you have a DSL modem attached to the Dlink wi fi device then down power the DSL modem and wait 30 seconds and repower it up. Wait 5 minutes for it to resync with the dsl on the phone line.

As a side note
Have you had the DSL upgraded like from dsl -1 to DSL -2 if yes then check the dsl filter on the phone line sockets can handle DSL - 2

Diagnostics
go to the P.C windows o/s I hope .
Go to command prompt
ping the routers ip address
10.0.0.1 or 192.168.0.1 is the most likely ip address
type in ipconfig
press enter
what is the default gateway (this is the router ip address)
Type in tracert www.google.com
press enter
Can you resolve the DNS name . and get an ip address
if no then DNS server issue check DNS server settings are they on AUTO . in modem or DSL router .
See if the IP hops get to the modem or to the ISP .

I was thinking about buying this but i was thinking if i have this would i still need an internet at my house or would this work even if i dont have own internet at home?

You definately need to have internet connection. Wi-fi Router can only provide you the facility to access internet wirelessly within its range. In order to do so, you have to connect the router to your DSL modem.

Hope it Helps!

Cant connect wii to internet

The unit can connect to the Internet by utilizing its 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, which is built in, for wireless connections or via a USB-to-Ethernet adaptor for DSL connections.
For your wireless connection or Wi-Fi, the 802.11b Wi-Fi has a data rate of 11 Mbits per second and has an indoor range of 30m or approximately 98 ft. The 802.11g has the same indoor range, however the data rate is at 54 Mbits per second. If you have an existing wireless connection or are in a Wi-Fi hotspot, the unit will connect to your wireless connection automatically out of the box. If you do not have a wireless network, however, you will need to have your wireless network subscription done or set-up first. Once you have wireless Internet access, you then search for your access point, put in your security settings and you’re good to go. It would also be advisable to have a wireless router for this so that you won’t have to shuttle the connection between your PC and your Wii. wi-fi-usb-connector.thumbnail.jpgAnother option would be to connect your Wii via the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector. This accessory allows Nintendo Wii users who do not have an existing Wi-Fi connection or a compatible Wi-Fi network to create one through their broadband or DSL connected computer. This is inserted into your existing computer’s USB port and the Wi-Fi USB Connector acts as a wireless access point for the Wii. This allows the user access to the internet and to play Wi-Fi Connection games from Nintendo Online.
nintendo-wii-lan-adapter.thumbnail.jpgFor your DSL connection, however, you will need to have quite a few things. You can use a WII LAN adapter to connect your Wii to your DSL modem. You can also use a router so that you can use your PC and your Wii at the same time. With the LAN Adapter though, to use or plug in the Wii, you must disconnect your PC. This can be quite tedious since you will have to plug in and out your PC and your Wii every time you need to use one or the other. A LAN Adapter is fairly cheap, but if you get a router, your PC and your Wii can go online at the same time, saving you the hassle of connecting one or the other when you need them. You can then hook up the existing ethernet cords to the back of the router and connect it to the Wii via a USB 2.0 cord.

i hope this helps

Cannot get ipod touch to connect to wireless network

Many Wi-Fi issues can be resolved by doing the following:
Basic troubleshooting
  • Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and then on again.
  • Verify that you are in range of your Wi-Fi router or base station.
  • Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and Cable/DSL modem are connected to power and turned on.
  • Check whether other devices (portable computers, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the Internet.

Help please

you can go to any wi-fi locations near your area and access the internet on your laptop. I think AT&T offers wi-fi access to its members on any of its designated hotspot /wifi locations (nearly 15,000 company-owned & roaming) e.g. McDonald's, Barnes & Noble bookstores, leading airports, coffee shops, etc. you can visit att.com and login to your account to find more details.
or call them at: 1-888-888-7520

you don't need to install any software/ dsl installation on your laptop when you are using a public wi-fi connection, just ensure that your computer firewall is on and take precautions when sending out any personal info online.

Have you been able to connect through your router at home? I'd get that set up and running first. Then doing it on the road will merely be variations on a familiar theme. If you've tried at home but it hasn't worked, let us know something about your home network (what kind of router? using security/encryption?), and about what you've already tried so we can try to help.
