Rennai hot water heater very slow to heat up!

I would check the gas pressure at the burner. It should be 3.5 inches water column on the manifold. Hope this helps.

We had to switch propane tanks and run more copper tubing, our old tank ran empty. We are trying to relight heaters but they won't light. Is there something we need to do to the heater so they will...

yes - your husband is right, there is a auto cut off on the regulator itself. there is a chance that the cut off has failed. you can check this by simply undoing the gas line that leaves the regulator and cracking open the valve and see ( hear/smell ) if gas is coming out,, if gas is coming out then the cut off is working and the problem is down the line somewhere ( like another valve right at the heater ) ---... if you hear no gas coming out then the cut off is bad and you will need to replace the regulator with a new one.
also check for the smell and sound of gas at the heater while you are trying to light it -- ( NOTE: don't hold the gas button down to long if you do hear/smell gas and it is not lighting , because as soon as it does start it will flash in a BIG fire ball,,, between testings -- always let it air out some and then try again ) --- if the igniter is not lighting the fuel then use a lighter or a propane torch to get it going,, I have seen the thermo coupler go bad on the units and that will only allow the flow of gas during ' pilot ' light mode but will go out right away when you move the switch to ' ON '. ( just food for thought ).
stay warm out there ---

How do you turn the pilot light back on? This is an older model, probably about 10 years old or so.

Move the gas valve knob to the PILOT position and press down on the knob. You will be pressing down on a spring loaded safety magnet. Now light the pilot and keep holding down the knob till the thermocouple gets hot enough to produce electrical current and hold that spring loaded magnet in. This is your safety device. If the heat gets too hot the furnace has a fuse in line with that magnet.
When the pilot stays lit by itself without you having to hold down the button then advance the knob to the ON position. Then go to the wall thermostat and turn on the heater.

Rennai gas unflued heater kerosene fumes

Have it checked properly - sometimes the reg won't open fully, but the heater will still run, but with improper combustion resulting in a funny smell.

Pilot light keeps going out

Dan, Since you just had the tank filled and the heatewr installed a tinty piece of trash could have entered the pilot orfice. Un do the lower floor panel take off the pilot assy. Blow out the small pilot orfice. Blow reverse from normal gas flow to unlodge the debre. Re asemble and light.
If this dosen't work It may be the pilot air intake is too open causing the pilot to blow itself out.If thats the case close off the air adjustment some. It will be located behind where the flame exits the pilot orfice.

Heater won't light

YOU HAVE A BAD THERMOCOUPLE. IF YOU LOOK AT THE FLAME you should see a little match size piece of gold metel connected to a metal tube like then screwed into the gas valve. what happens is when you light the pilot, the gas heats up one end of the thermocouple and the other end changes that heat into microvoltage. the gas valve senses the microvoltage , knows the pilot light is lit then opens the main gas valve. when they go bad they cant send voltage to valve and th valve locks out. you always have to start at off. then depress valve button and turn to pilot and light it. hold button down 3 minutes then turn to full open or main the thermocouples are cheap, call supply houses or service companoies till you find one that will sell you one. unscrew the thermo couple from the valve with a little wrench unwravel the excess tubing , size of a pencil lead in diametor, then the probe part usually slids up through a spring like holder, note position of old sensor before reoming. get end half of new sensor into good pilot flame. reuae old retainers or new ones that come with new t couple.

Try vacuum cleaning the filter as the heater shuts down to protect itself from over-temperature. NB-turn off the heater before doing it. And yes, you add water to the tray (...carefully) - this increases the apparent heat. Peter
