Tonearm lifter in UP position - how to fix

Hi, I have a Technics SL-1900 turntable, the tonearm lift control handle moves up and down fine, but tonearm remains in up position. Is it possible to fix so tonearm will lower to play the record? thanks, Steve I have the same problem. It seems to be a hydraulic issue that would involve getting inside the 1900 to repair -- way beyond my expertise. A simple workaround is to:

Move the start/stop switch to "start" to engage the turntable. The turntable will lift the tonearm and move it over the record. After about 30 seconds, the plastic bridge that keeps the tonearm raised will "unlock" and you can push it down manually to drop the needle on the record.

SOURCE: tonearm lifter in UP position - how to fix

I have also had this problem with the same model turntable. I opened mine up and the problem seems to have been that the grease on the arm lift and cueing lever was gumming up the linkage between the two. (I suspect that my turntable hadn't been used in some time.) I managed to free up the parts by manually working the the arm lift (pressing it down) several times. I'm not sure that I needed to open up the chasis for this fix but it did help me to see what was going on. Good luck with yours.

Tone arm on technics Sl-BD22 lifts before the end of an album

the anti-skate is set wrong, this stops the arm skatting on to the label in the middle of the record & destroying your stylus tip.

Hi folks, my sl 1210 has one broken tonearm axle bearing! What could I do? thanks a lot! your ferdi

Hi, sadly that part is not available separately and Technics would have you buy a complete tonearm. I have damaged tonearms in stock from replacement jobs and would be happy to send you a bearing and bush from one of those. Contact me at Styluscity.com. Cheers John.

Hi, have you tried manually moving the tonearm (with tt off) from its stating position across the platter to the centre? If you do this and find you get resistance at a certain point then there is damage to the tone arm base or bearings. Is the tonearm lifter going down completely?

My turntable is Technics model SL-DD33 and all of a sudden stop working I changed the power supply cord and it didn't fix the problem. Will you please advise or where I could take it for repair and if it...

Define what isn't working. Is it dead (no motor, lights, anything)?

Or is there just no sound. The output of the cartridge is independent of any power. A basic test to see if it's alive is to lift the tonearm, select the Phono on your electronics, TURN THE VOLUME WAY DOWN TO JUST A SKOOTCH OFF OF SILENCE, place the tonearm somewhere over the platter and lightly brush the stylus (BACK TO FRONT) with your finger tip. You'll hear objectionable noise from both channels if the conenctions are all intact.

Lifter moves, but doesn't reach the tonearm

it was probably lifted with the arm locked in the cradle.there is usually a set screw on the side of the arm lifter to adjust the height.it is on the lower half on most,so removing the bottom cover of the turntable is needed.loosen the screw and slide the piston up until it almost touches the arm in the down position.that way when you raise the lever,it will raise the arm. lift up the rubber mat and tape the platter to the side of the unit so it does not turn or fall,if you do not want to remove it .

Tonearm lift is probably a deteriorated belt. Google it, it's pretty common. The platter spinning might be due to a bad control board. You'll probably have to go to a repair shop to diagnose it.

Technics SL 1600 MK2

Your tonearm is damaged. More than likely the bearings on the tonearm have been damaged. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this. You'll have to have the tonearm replaced, however, parts for the SL1600MK2 have been discontinued. The tonearm for the SL1200MK2 might fit it, but you will need to do some retro-fitting in order to make it work properly. Something only a qualified service center could perform.

Hope this helps some.

Good luck!
