Hi this can come from a lot of things, software or hardware. To get a good answer, please indicate precisely what you see and hear at startup.

That's old. Besides the main battery, there is likely a silver oxide disk (newer) or 1/2 AA battery (older) for the PRAM and is needed for startup, IIRC. If the battery does not have the full 1.5 or 3.0V, your machine will not work. Another sign of a bad backup battery is that the clock forgets the time when unplugged. -Ken
