Hi this can come from a lot of things, software or hardware. To get a good answer, please indicate precisely what you see and hear at startup.

That's old. Besides the main battery, there is likely a silver oxide disk (newer) or 1/2 AA battery (older) for the PRAM and is needed for startup, IIRC. If the battery does not have the full 1.5 or 3.0V, your machine will not work. Another sign of a bad backup battery is that the clock forgets the time when unplugged. -Ken

The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

My macbook is frozen on booting up w apple and spinning circle. I have tried several things found online but didn't work ...please help!

ok some macs behave differently so when booting up continually hit f2 and it may take you to a bios or produce its sigh noise and boot up. however on some newer macs this is f12. alternatively putting in your install disc will prompt it to boot from cd and then you can potentially trick is to booting.
make sure nothing is connected when booting. it may be a hard drive corruption and possibly re installing the operating system will resolve this.
but you will lose data.

I mac password

Boot from the system CD that came with your machine (or any Mac operating system CD). When you restart the machine, hold down the C key to tell the machine to boot from the CD. When it boots up, you'll be able to go to the menu bar at the top, and choose the option to reset your password.
