If you receive this error message when you restart the computer for the first time during an upgrade to Windows XP, your original operating system will still work correctly. In some cases, you may see a message that states that the wrong cable is being used. However, you may not see this message on computers that have a fast startup time.

  • If the file system is damaged, you can use chkdsk /r command to repair the volume. However, if you use the chkdsk /r command, you may lose some data.
  • You will need the Windows startup disks or the Windows installation disk. If you do not have them, contact the computer manufacturer for help in obtaining the disks.
  • You will need the administrator password to complete the steps.

Unmountable boot volume

This is caused by a corrupted boot partition on your hard drive. If you have a windows 7 DVD or if your computer has a recovery partition you can boot in these and go to the repair option, select command prompt and type chkdsk /r to attempt to repair the damage.
Comment back with your computer make and model and what operating system and I can give you better directions

UNMOUNTABLE DISK VOLUME Message on ACER Aspire One.

Unmountable boot volume is most likely an indication of a failing hard drive. Boot to your Windows CD and run CHKDSK /R and see if issue resolves. If it doesn't then you are probably replacing the hard drive.

Unmountable Boot Volume BSOD

0xED is not just specifically present on HP computers but all PC-based computers which has XP or later using NTFS on it. It can be resolved by doing a chkdsk /f /r or by performing a repair installation using windows. This is caused by software corruption (which is repairable using the steps aforementioned) or hardware failure, which may lead to OS reinstallation or harddrive replacement
