First remove the platen. There is a lever at each end of the platen push them down and remove the platen.
Then inside the case on both sides are levers, pull them towards you and remove the case. The levers are inside the case right against it.

How do I remove the ball from an ibm selectric typewriter?

At the top of the Selectric ball there is or should be a rectangle in the plastic. This is a lever. Bend the lever until it is standing at 90 degrees to the original position. Give a tug on the lever. The ball should lift right out.
