sometimes the problem isn't noticeable. it could be a problem in the circuitry itself. how old/new is the amp? is the ground solid? what gauge is the wire? try hooking it up to the battery directly and instead of hooking up the remote wire from the head unit to the amp use a "jumper" (short wire) to connect it from the amp power wire terminal to the amp remote terminal. if its still in protect after that then the amp is bad and needs repair...

I have the subs hooked up to the amp and the speaker wires from the cd player connected, when i hook up the ground and power nothing happens.. sometimes the protect light comes on..? help..

LETS SEE IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE AMPLIFIER ITSELF OR IF SOMETHING IN THE INSTALL REMOVE THE RCA INPUTS AND DISCONNECT THE SPEAKERS, THEN POWER THE AMPLIFIER UP WITH THIS NO INPUT, NO SPEAKER LOAD CONDITION. IF IT STILL GOES INTO PROTECTION OR FAILS TO POWER UP AND YOU HAVE VERIFIED THAT THE POSITIVE AND ESPECIALLY THE GROUND CONNECTIONS, ALONG WITH THE REMOTE CONNECTIONS ARE 100%, THEN THE AMPLIFIER WILL NEED TO BE SERVICED. SOMETIMES THE RADIO CAN HAVE A DEFECTIVE SAGGING BELOW 11 VOLTS REMOTE OUTPUT WHICH WILL CAUSE THE AMPLIFIER TO NOT POWER UP. IF YOU DISCONNECT THE RADIOS REMOTE LEAD AT THE AMPLIFIER AND TEMPORARILY INSTALL A JUMPER FROM THE POSITIVE POWER TERMINAL AND THE REMOTE TERMINAL OF THE AMPLIFIER, THIS WILL NORMALLY FORCE THE AMPLIFIER ON. AT THIS POINT,YOU HAVE TOTALLY BENCHED THE AMPLIFIER AS IT WILL NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE ACTUAL INSTALLATION AND IF STILL FAULTY IT SIMPLY WILL HAVE TO BE SERVICED. LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED FURTHER ASSISTANCE.....V

My amps protection circuit keeps cutting on and off when i hook up my amp

Hello m_george191,

Usually an amp will go into protection when there is a problem with the wiring, impedance load, or when overheated. Immediately when hooked up, it probably isn't overheating.

Most likely, there's a short or ground on a speaker wire, an input, or a faulty ground to the amp itself. Frayed or broken insulation, stray wires shorting across the terminal blocks, and shorted voice coils can all cause the protection circuit to activate.

First check your power and ground wires. Then disconnect the speakers and inputs and see if the amp powers up normally. If the amp still goes into protection with all wires other than 12V +, Ground, and Remote disconnected, the amp itself is defective. If it powers up normally with all other wires disconnected, reconnect the inputs one at a time to determine if one of them causing the problem. Likewise, reconnect the speaker wires one at a time.

Hope this helps.

Protect light comes on, no power

Hello patrick_h_mi,

You'll also need a remote turn-on source for the amp to operate. Normally, this is a blue or blue/white wire from your head unit, but for test purposes, you just need 12V to the "remote" terminal on the amp. The amp should power up without speaker inputs or speaker connections, but it is not recommended.

Hope this helps.

Let our Experts solve your "My amp lights up like normal then protection light red comes on and turns the amp off resets and tries again. What would be my course of action

disconnect all wires (including RCAs)
reconnect positive, ground, and remote.
Turn amplifier (car) on.
If it goes into protect mode again - there is an internal fault that requires professional repair.
If the amplifier idles as normal - turn off the car. Plug in RCAs & re-try
Failure? - replace RCAs as they may be pinched or faulty.

Lastly if all connections are made and amplifier idles without going into protection - you need to concentrate on your load (subwoofers).
Be sure they are wired properly into a resistance that amplifier is rated.
The lowest impedence that amplifier is rated is 2ohm.
That is possible with (2) 4 ohm subwoofers wired in parallel....
(4) 8 ohm subwoofers wires in parallel...
(1) Quad 1 ohm subwoofer...
or (1) Dual 4 ohm voicecoil subwoofer.

Any other combination will result in an impedence too low for your amplifier.

Next:
Using an OhmMeter (Digital multimeter set to Ohms 20) test each voicecoil against its advertised resistance. It should be CLOSE +/- .5 Ohms.

Any other reading means the voicecoil is blown.

Amp goes dirctly into protect

ok well it could be two thing wrong your amp dont have a good ground or your amp is a smar amp and your subs must have to be hooked up so the power from the amp cn go to the subs so the amp can see that you do have subs hooked up to take it out of protect o and look at your fuses to to smal or to big will send it to protect to

Amp doesnt turn on.

it sounds like it is blown..one way to test it is put the remote wire and the power wire together and put it to the possitive of a drill battery and the put the ground to the nagitive at the drill battery..if it goes right to protect then it is blown!

Visonik 350watt Amp Doesnt Come On....

With your multimeter set to DC volts, the black meter probe on the ground terminal of the amp (not on the point where the ground wire connected to the vehicle) and the head unit on (so the amp will have remote voltage applied), touch the red probe alternately to the B+ and remote terminals of the amp. If the voltage is below ~11 volts, you need to check the wiring feeding whichever line is too low.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
