Question about ASUS A8Jp Notebook

1 Answer

ASUS A8JP Will Not Power On

My ASUS A8JP went dark while I was using it with the battery pack installed and the power supply plugged in.

The power supply and battery pack have both tested ok.

As soon as I plug the power supply into the computer the bright green light dims and starts flashing on and off and the computer remains "dead."

The two year warranty expired two months ago.

The tag on the bottom reads:

The charger tests fine for DC Volts and Amps both initially and under load. The battery tests as fully charged.

When the charger is connected to an AC source, the green LED shines steady and bright. When it is then connected to the notebook (both with and without the battery installed), the LED dims and slowly blinks.

The Notebook will not power on no matter if the power suplly and battery are both present, or the power supply alone, or the battery alone.

I'm pretty much satisfied that something on the Main Board is gone. That's a $200.00 part from ASUS.

Thank you, but that's not it. I wish it were.

As originally stated, the Notebook went dark (shut down all at once) when the Power Supply was attached and with the battery installed.

The Power Supply is producing 19VDC and 4.74 Amps. Through a 6VDC resistor, it produces a steady 13VDC.

The battery produces 11.1VDC across its terminals.

There is continuity through the DC power port on the Main Board to the battery terminals on the Main Board, and through the power switch on the main board.

    Once again, thank you.

    Resolved:

One of the three-fingered clips that stablize the door over the fan/heatsink/cpu/video card compartment had come loose and was lodged between the I/O shield and the main board under the the power switch.

    Everything's working now.

    Thank you.

are you 100% positive that the charger is ok? i mean, have you tried it on another computer (without battery when testing)?

and you say that the light dims when you insert the charger. does the led always light up green when ac- is not connected? have you tried to take out the battery and reinsert it?

tried to boot the computer only on ac-without battery?

"When the charger is connected to an AC source, the green LED shines steady and bright."

are you talking about the led on the AC-adaptor? cause if its that led that dims down, its a defective ac-adapter (even tho you still might not believe me). replace it and try again.

how would you know that the battery is fully charged?

please rate my solution after you have tested if it works out for you :)

you still havent tried a different ac-adapter. you should, since its a rather easy thing to try.

... and as said. i promise you its the charger.

i have measured several adapters seemingly outputting enough voltage. the fact is that it doesnt handle to produce enough watts.

"As originally stated, the Notebook went dark (shut down all at once)
when the Power Supply was attached and with the battery installed."
the charger was defective, and the battery was out.

hehe. i wont give you up before you try another charger. head over to the closest el.store and ask to try another charger in your computer :) when you say you have tried, then we can settle.

    i just noticed you wrote:

"The Power Supply is producing 19VDC and 4.74 Amps. Through a 6VDC resistor, it produces a steady 13VDC"

does the voltage drop when you connect a resistor? how many Ohm was the resistor? simply adding a resistor shouldnt lower the Voltage.
tbh, it seems to me you proved that the charger fails when you put load to it (dropping from 19v to 13v)

i might be totally off, but i'm actually educated as an low current electrician (tho toooo many years ago ;) )

My aceraspire4330 wont power on

you can try the power system check by doing the following:

To verify the symptom of the problem, power on the computer using each of the following power sources:
1. Remove the battery pack.
2. Connect the power adapter and check that power is supplied.
3. Disconnect the power adapter and install the charged battery pack; then check that power is supplied by
the battery pack.

If you suspect a power problem, see the appropriate power supply check in the following list:
"Check the Power Adapter"
"Check the Battery Pack"

Check the Power Adapter
Unplug the power adapter cable from the computer and measure the output voltage at the plug of the power
adapter cable. See the following figure
1. If the voltage is not correct, replace the power adapter.
2. If the voltage is within the range, do the following:
* Replace the System board.
* If the voltage is not correct, go to the next step.
NOTE: An audible noise from the power adapter does not always indicate a defect.
3. If the power-on indicator does not light up, check the power cord of the power adapter for correct
continuity and installation.
4. If the operational charge does not work, see "Check the Battery Pack"

Pin 1: +19 to +20.5V (Centre pin)
Pin 2: 0V, Ground (Shielding / Surround)

Check the Battery Pack
To check the battery pack, do the following:
From Software:
1. Check out the Power Management in control Panel
2. In Power Meter, confirm that if the parameters shown in the screen for Current Power Source and Total Battery Power Remaining are correct.
3. Repeat the steps 1 and 2, for both battery and adapter.
4. This helps you identify first the problem is on recharging or discharging.

From Hardware:
1. Power off the computer.
2. Remove the battery pack and measure the voltage between battery terminals 1(+) and 6(ground).
(Terminal 1 is closest to the edge, Terminal 6 is closest to centre)
3. If the voltage is still less than 7.5 Vdc after recharging, replace the battery.

To check the battery charge operation, use a discharged battery pack or a battery pack that has less than 50% of the total power remaining when installed in the computer. If the battery status indicator does not light up, remove the battery pack and let it return to room temperature.

Re-install the battery pack.
If the charge indicator still does not light up, replace the battery pack. If the charge indicator still does not light up, replace the DC/DC charger board.

Remove the power supply, remove the battery, remove the RAM and remove the hdd.
Plug in the power supply and press the power button, it should complain as there is no RAM or hdd. Unplug the power supply, replace the hdd and RAM then power it up and press power on.

Dim green light on power supply blinking

If the Power supply LED dims and flickers its either your motherboard circuit has been cut or there is a short in the laptop. The AC adapter is not the cause.

Try this:
Remove the battery, then press power button to drain all the current, then re-install battery and plug to adapter.

If that doesn't work, then it's most likely the motherboard.

Computer just shut off and wont come back on. what can i do?

your battery power plan is not set correctly.

you have a bad battery

unplug unit. Take out battery pack plug unit into power without the battery installed.

if it starts up go to control Panel and reset power plan. have alarm go off at 20%

shut computer down... install battery pack...Start the computer

you should see battery icon and it should indicate it is plugged in and charging. if it doesn't start up you may have bad battery

Computer freezes when connected to external power supply. Works perfectly on battery power, but freezes on Windows shut down.

take out the battery and try without battery installed
if still the same then your power socket is faulty or the power pack is faulty

replace it and you'll be running again

Laptop won't power up without battery, needs 135W adapter

The ASUS power adapter is below spec and it may damage the adapter because the HP is drawing 45 W more power than it can deliver and will cause it to overheat.
The 17" HP requires 18.5 or 19 volts depending upon the model of the HP laptop (check the power requirements on the label on the bottom of the laptop). If the ASUS adapter doesn't deliver this voltage, it most likely won't power up the HP laptop.
Use the power supply/adapter from the other 15" HP. If this HP's adapter has a voltage output of 19 volts and the 17" laptop requires 18.5 volts, don't worry a voltage difference of 0.5 volts, the only problem is whether the power plug will fit into the power socket of the 17" HP laptop.

Laptop will not power on at all.

Don't know what you have for a laptop, so will have to give you a generic process, here. Power down. Remove hard drive, remove cd reader and/or floppy drive. Remove memory cards. Replace only 1 memory card in the main slot (probably marked as slot 1). Try to power it back up and let us know what happens.
Thanks!
