SOURCE: My Oreck XL was working fine, then when I vacuumed a shag rug is started smoking and smelled like something is burning. (I changed the bag, checked for clogs--none found, and roller brush is turning.

Even though the brush is spinning, the belt is probably worn out and stretched. when you vacuum the shag carpet, it puts more drag on the brush. try running it on a shorter carpet or hard floor for a few minutes. if it doesn't smoke, then you know it's your belt. if it does smoke, then it's probably the motor burning up.

Check that the beater bar is completely clear of thread, this will bring the brush roll back to normal. Also check the sides of the brush roll doesn't have anything such as thread or thick string at the sides.

SOURCE: My Oreck Vacuum cleaner keeps burning up belts. I

I am having the same trouble. I bought the vacuum new in October 2007 when my wife and I purchased a newly constructed home. Since it is only two of us, she only has to vacuum once a month. I have taken it in three different times and get the same story. It needed a new belt. Mine has white smoke coming out of it and smells like burning rubber. I contacted Oreck and got no results. They refused to let me discuss this with Dave Oreck, stating that he nevers talks with customers! Gary Neeble

SOURCE: my Oreck vacuum cleane won't turn on

I have an Oreck vacuum. My son used it just earlier today and it worked just fine, then just a little while ago a tried to turn it on to vacuum our bedroom and suddenly it won't turn on! I tried plugging it into other outlets but it was no use. My husband takes a look at it and first thinks that the switch is out in it. He takes the handle apart and quickly realizes that it is not the switch that is causing the problem. Then he took the base of the vacuum apart, removes the spin brush part and cleans it off, puts it back together, and suddenly it works! He said that when those brushes get real dirty the motor gets clogged, then it just won't turn on. I'm just happy I married someone who can figure these things out, because even if I knew the problem I'm still no good with a screwdriver, taking things apart and putting them back together again. Hope this works for your Oreck too and it's running again for you soon.

When i press the wreck magnesium power button the unit starts but turns off after ten seconds. What the problem as the light continues to flash.

Robert,
You could have a couple of problems. 1, you could have a broken belt, 2, you could have a bad sensor, or 3, you could have a bad pc board. The Magnesium has a sensor that detects whether or not the brush is turning. A quick way to check would be turn the vacuum over and turn it on, if the brush does not turn in those 10 seconds, you have a broken belt. If it does turn, I would suggest taking it to an Oreck repair store because it may still be under warranty and the sensor or pc board may still be covered under warranty. Hope this helps!

How do I reset my oreck vacuum cleaner

If you are talking about the Oreck Magnesium vacuum, press the start button and hold it for about 15 seconds. Beyond that, most Oreck vacuums do not have any reset buttons.

Why does blinking light come on and vacuum shuts off

If this is happening right after you turn the vacuum on, you probably have a belt issue or a brush roller issue. I would start with checking your brush roller to see if it spins freely. If it spins real freely, your belt is probably broken. If it spins freely but with some resistance, you still might need to replace the belt. I just worked on one last week that had that problem and a new belt fixed it. Worse case scenario, you might have a bad sensor. That sensor looks for the brush to spin at a certain speed and if it does not sense the right speed, it shuts the vacuum down and the light flashes. Hope this helps!

Oreck magnesium keeps shutting off

Need to check your brush roller to see if it is spinning. Turn the vacuum over and turn it on. If the brush spins before it shuts off, you may need to check the bearings to see if any strings or hair has built up around the brush bearing shafts and is causing the brush to spin slower. If the brush does not spin, you have a broken belt and you will need to replace it. The Magnesium has a sensor that looks for the brush to spin at a certain speed and if it does not, it will shut down. Hope this helps!

2013 Oreck Vacuum . How can I check to see if it is stopped up?

If it scatters the dirt then it's definitely clogged up at the nozzle just behind the roller brush. Turn the sweeper upside down and stand it on the handle. Then look under the roller brush. I have two Oreck's in my house. You can take a screwdriver to loosen the clog and dump out the dirt. Don't try to pick up pine needles as these are sticky and will quickly clog up any vacuum sweeper.

Oreck xl

Sounds like the Oreck is clogged. You'll have to undo the bag by the way of the clip in the middle at the back of the main black spindel neck and then at the bottom. Then take apart the main neck by pushing the rubber mounts upwards to release the pip fitting locks and holes. You should find that either the top of the neck or the bottom - where the dust channel feeder is located - is clogged. Either that or there may be a clog in the main dust channel after the roller brush or wedged into the fan unit itself - the Oreck XL is a dirty fan system which means clogged dirt can often get stuck between the dirt and the dirt channel.

Oreck Vacuum Cleaner problem (upright)

The best solution to any Oreck vacuum problem is to replace it with another brand. You are going to continue having problems with the Oreck..Not that other brands don't have problems. But, at least with
other brands the problems don't occur as often. Belt burning up. clogs, roller brush bristle wearing down prematurely, cord breaking internally, etc.
P.S. Oreck is good at one thing. Marketing!
