Brother HL2040 - Shading of toner all over my page when I print

Initally I had a low toner light. I shook the cartridge and put back in the printer......then had red light flasing for low paper light. Plenty of paper is in the tray. Still wouldn't print, so I pulled the cartridge back out and cleaned the drum. Its now printing but the printer piece of paper is just covered with toner....the paper looks very dirty, but can read the print.

I only rubbed it lightly with a tissue.

  • debminor May 21, 2009

the problem of the shading actually occured prior to me cleaning the drum with the tissue.

I have bought a new cartridge along with a new drum. The problem is now fixed. The drum last for 12000 copies on this particular printer. I have had it refiled 4 times and each refill equals 2500 copies. There it has done at least 10,000 copies. Since purchasing the new cartridge and drum it is working fine. Thank goodness....

The drum is a very sensitive part. Should not touch with bare hand, expose to light for long, etc. With what did you clean,it.

BROTHER-MFC7430 Toner life end

actually, you dont' really need to replace your drum, your drum actually is good for 5-6 years.
you just need to clean up the drum with duster and put that back into the machine.
when reset the drum, you just need to open the front cover and press Clear buttom then 1.
after that the whole thing will be reset and ready to go for it.

Toner light won't turn off

I print about 100 pages a day, and the toner light kept coming on after about 300 pages, even though I was buying brand new
$70.00 cartridges. Finally I looked at the cartridge carefully and put a piece of masking tape over the hole in the cartridge through which the printer shines a light that determines there is not enough toner. Now I get 1200 or more pages per cartridge. Brother assistance was no help at all, but they must have had complaints about this before. You have to keep an eye on the print quality and decide for yourself when the toner cartridge needs replacing! Good luck! I'll never buy another Brother, although the printer is terrific, but the design is flawed.

Low print quality

It depends upon the number of prints you have done since Feb and the toner cartridge capacity. Some toner cartridges have 2500 page capacity others have 5000 pages or more.
If you think you have not exceeded or reached the cartridge capacity, take it out of the printer and give it a shake in a horizontal position to distribute the toner evenly across the drum and place it back in the printer. This also works when the toner is nearly empty.

Ready light doesn't stay lit, alarm light is red

Because I was getting gray shading on my pages and data was still being printing, I decided to change the toner cartridge. Now the pages are clean and white and all the lights function properly. Most cartridges that are running on empty don't print any data at all or at least print the data at the top of the page and gradually gets fainter sp? on the page. Who would have thought just by changing the cartridge would solve the problem? So glad that's all it was........wasn't excited about having to buy a new printer.

Someone shook the toner before putting it in the printer and now i have toner powder on the pages when i try to print. how do i clean it out?

Pull the drum and toner cartridge out and spray inside of printer with canned air. Make sure you keep the can upright when spraying. Uncllip toner from drum and spray the area on the drum where the toner clips on. Move the corona cleaner from one side of the drum to the other a couple times, reseat toner in drum, put cartridge back in printer and print a few pages to remove toner that may have settled after spraying.

Brother 2140 toner light on, won't even try to print.

To get every bit of toner powder out of the cartridge, first remove the toner unit from the drum assembly. Second, find the little circular window on the right-side of the toner cartridge. Third, place a piece of black electrical tape over the clear window, cannot be clear tape. Fourth, re-install the toner cartridge into the drum assembly. Last, put the complete unit back into your printer. This worked for me.

Brother HL-2040 Printing With Strange Gray Marks on Back of Paper

Sounds to me like the toner - that is the toner cartridge has the wrong toner in it. The drum should be OK - clean it up first and then use a genuine toner cartridge OR you can buy our refill kit on eBay - search for Brother HL2040 - michellem6123

Paper light on...!!

Turn the printer off. Take out the toner drum and cartridge. Remove the toner cartridge by pressing on the blue lever on the left side. Check for paper. Replace the cartridge. At the rear of the toner drum is a blue slide lever on the right side for cleaning the corona wire. Move the lever back and forth, left and right, about 30 times. Reset lever to far right side with arrows lining up. Set the drum and cartridge aside. Remove the paper tray and look inside for a jammed sheet of paper. Flip the back lid down and check for paper. Snap the back lid up, replace the paper tray, and replace the drum and toner cartridge. Turn the printer on. Press the ready button 3 times quickly. It should print a specifications sheet. If it does, try printing from your computer. If this did not help, Brother tech support is 1-800-276-7746. Robi
