After instillation, the washer runs several times-then we noticed my hot water heater is shutting the pilot light off. Back pressure possibly on the Hot water side? Was purchased as floor model and N

Water heater is shutting off after washer runs several times...I am thinking there might be a back pressure problem on the hot water side creating too much back prssure on the hot water system and the heater is shutting it self off.

How to replace a Water Heater Pressure Relief (TP) Valve

A conventional storage water heater has a small valve screwed into its tank that is designed to relieve built-up steam pressure if the water heater overheats--othewise, the pressure could cause the water heater to explode.

This valve has several names, including temperature and pressure relief valve, pressure relief valve, T&P valve, or--in its shortest form--TP valve. As TP valves get old, they can begin to drip or leak and may need to be replaced.
Though it is recommended that you periodically test this device by lifting its little lever to make sure it is working, doing this with an old valve can cause it to leak. With this in mind, be ready to shut off the water supply to the water heater and replace the TP valve if this happens when you test.
Here is how to replace a TP valve:
1. Shut off the cold water and gas or electricity coming to the water heater.
2. Drain the water from the tank until the water level is below the valve. To do this, run hot water at any faucet, shower, or bathtub.
3. Raise the lever on the valve to release any excess pressure. Loosen the valve by turning it counter-clockwise with a wrench, and then remove it slowly. If water begins to pour out, screw it back in and drain more water from the tank. Note: The water may be hot unless you've allowed time for it to cool!
4. Put pipe-thread tape on the threads of the TP valve and then screw it in, turning clockwise. Tighten it with a wrench.
5. Turn the cold water supply and gas or electricity back on and, for a gas water heater, relight the pilot light if necessary.

I have a Rheem 40 gal. tank that is leaking water front the top where the vent stack is. It is pouring out. Can it be repaired?

A leaking water heater cannot be repaired, assuming it's the tank leaking and not nearby water pipe.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-leaking.html

First thing is to protect your property from catastrophic tank failure where tank ruptures and water runs until it is shut off:
Tanks are under pressure when they are hot.
Close cold water shut-off located above tank.
Turn control knob to 'pilot' so pilot is lit but burner will not turn on.
Open hot side on tub for few moments to relieve tank pressure.

Now your property is safe.
You need a new water heater.
In mean time, gas water heater makes 41 gallons hot water per hour.
Shower used 5-9 gallons hot water.
Bath uses 10-15 gallons hot water.
You can turn on water heater for short stretches and limp by until you get a new heater.

No water comes out of the hot side of my shower or bathtub

Hello,

Based on gas prices, often gas hot water heaters can be a more cost-effective option than electric models and preferred by many homeowners. However, gas hot water heater models can have their own set of problems that differ from electric versions. You will not find it difficult to perform some basic troubleshooting to resolve an issue with a gas hot water heater.

Instructions

  1. 1 Determine if the gas supply has been shut off. No gas will cause the hot water heater to stop producing hot water. Turning the gas supply back on should be your first troubleshooting technique.
  2. 2 Check the pilot light. If you are experiencing no hot water, the pilot light of your gas hot water heater may have distinguished. Turn off the gas source and place a match over the pilot light tube to relight it.
  3. 3 Adjust the thermostat of your hot water heater. If you find that the hot water runs out quickly or does not get hot enough, you may need to set the temperature of the gas hot water heater higher. Typically, set the dial between the medium and hot setting for adequate hot water.
  4. 4 Inspect the gas hot water heater. The burner orifice and flue can both become clogged on a hot water heater. Turn off the gas and use a wire brush to clean out any debris that may have become lodged in these sections.
  5. 5 Ensure that all the burner access covers are in place. If the pilot light will not stay lit, it could be due to exposure to drafts.
  6. 6 Flush the tank. Certain deposits can build up over time when using a gas hot water heater which can cause the tank to produce a banging noise. To flush it, turn the heater off and open the pressure relief valve and drain valve on the water heater. Use a hose to flush water through the system until the hose runs clear.

Thanks.

Hello,

If your GE hot water heater fails to light, the first thing you should do is make sure the gas is turned on. Before checking the gas be sure to turn the control knob over to "Pilot." This will prevent the heater from coming on unexpectedly while you are checking the unit. After making sure that the knob is set to "Pilot," carefully remove the cover and look for the flame at the end of the gas line.
If the pilot light is not on, it is possible that the gas inlet valve is partially or totally closed. To check, turn the handle next to the line and follow the instructions on the tank to relight the pilot light. Keep the cover off of the unit and look for the pilot light to go on. If the pilot light does not light, gas may not be flowing. If you suspect a problem with the gas line, be sure to contact your utility company right away.
If you suspect that the burner on your GE hot water heater is not on, remove the cover and carefully look at the burner. If the burner is not on, make sure that the thermostat is set properly. The thermostat should be set to approximately 120 degrees Fahrenheit - if the setting it not right adjust it and then turn on a hot water faucet and allow it to run for several minutes. After the faucet has been running for a few minutes, look at the burner again. If the burner does not ignite, try adjusting the thermostat up and down until the burner comes on.
Good luck.

After a few minutes of burner heating the water, gas shuts off.

A couple of things to check:

If possible, remove the pilot gas assembly and clean the gas jet and thermocouple - they can get carboned up and stop working properly. Make sure the pilot flame and deflector is aimed properly and making the thermocouple glow red hot. If the problem persists, you may want to replace the thermocouple and also check the propane regulator.

Gas hot water tank, pilot light

Look inside the water heater when it is heating the water, the flame should be blue. If it has yellow tips on the flame, it needs an adjustment to the air shutter. There is a nut on this air shutter to make this adjustment. This adjusts the air gas mixture. You may first try just simply tapping on the burner lightly to loosen any debris that may have built up and vacuum it out. MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF THE GAS BEFORE CLEANING THE BURNER!! Also, check for drafts that may be blowing out your pilot light, Furnace register or outside drafts on windy nights. Some water heaters have an automatic shut down if the water heater gets too hot, so don't have it set to its hottest setting. Most water heaters only last about 10 years or so, It could be you are ready for a new one....Joe
