SOURCE: Primer bulb won't hold prime

Check the fuel filter, air filter, and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for decay or other damage. Remove the carburetor and check the impulse passage that runs from the crankcase, through the gaskets and heat insulator, to the carburetor base--these impulses cause the carburetor to pump fresh fuel into itself. You may need to clean the carburetor inside and out with spray carburetor cleaner. Check the diaphragm in the lower chamber for softness and no damage. Go to: http://www.drystacked.com for a 12 page article on Walbro brand carburetors for theory and troubleshooting--this applies to other brand carburetors as well. Hope some of this helps!

Who connected these hoses? the normal routing for a machine with a primer is like this, the fuel hose from the tank with the filter on the end goes to the carb fuel inlet nozzel ( not to the primer ) nearest to the pump cover ( cover on carb held with one screw ) the pipe from the metering side of the carb connects to the shorter nozzel on the primer bulb ( suction side ), the longer nozzel on the primer ( pressure side ) connects to the pipe going back to the tank, just remember the primer pulls fuel from the carb, into the bulb, and pushes it back into the tank, it is not actually a primer it is a purge. because it is connected this way it is impossible to flood the engine no matter how many times the bulb is pressed.
Let me know if it starts and runs.

Look inside the tank. Some units have a stone inside that blocks the fuel line when it is tipped a certain way. Might be what's happening here.

Mercury 40 2011. Boat starts great but will turn off after 10 to 18 minutes of use. I then have to pump primer bulb a lot of times. I have replaced with new primer bulb but with continue to shut down.

Just some pondering........
Runs
good when cold but when warms up it dies.
Have you checked for spark at the plugs right after it died?
Have you tried priming it (squirt gas into carb)
What happens if you pull the choke on the moment that it starts to die?
Wild guess? Vacuum leak at carb gasket. If bolts are not snug, when the engine warms up it might expand enough to let air in past the gasket.

Chainsaw will not continue to run

Their should be 3 to 4 Carb adjustments "L" for low "H" for high the "I" for Idle, adjust the screws till their all the way shut and 1/4 turns each till it starts up, but if it starts as you say it does just adjust the Idle speed.

We have a briggs and stratton mower that has been in storage for 5 years with very few hours on it, it will start but dies shortly after.

needs to have carb cleaned out. most likely the main jet in the carb is plugged. symptoms include only running on choke and dies when choke is turned to run. or if you only have a primer bulb, it will only run for only a few seconds every time it is primed. if you are qualified to work on the carb, dont forget to start with fresh gas and possibly new fuel line and filter. Replaced primer bulb and all fuel lines still getting air in lines. ran pretty good for about 10 minutes now will start with choke but dies in a few seconds. Cannot rev. up. cleaned under both plates but...

The primer bulb pulls fuel from bottom of fuel tank, when bulb is full it will return fuel back into tank, the hose entering bulb runs in the tank to bottom with filter on the end,the return hose stops just as it enters the tank maybe 3/4",make sure the hoses entering tank are tight fit or they will pull air in and leak.the carb may also need rebuild/clean,there is a screen inside of carb that may be stopped up which will need to be replaced.(carb kit).

I can start my 4.75 HP Briggs & Stratton Lawnmower but it dies after a few minutes. I replaced the armature but the same thing happens. I can keep it running if I press the prime bulb a couple of times...

Try replacing the float and needle. The float (floats) and pulls the needle up to let gas through to the carb. It will stay running as long as you press the prime bulb because this sends gas straight to the carb without going through the gas bowl. It's best to remove the carb and clean it then replace the float and needle

Primer will not pull gas to carb and will not run. gasket replaced

You can check the priming circuit manually by pulling the plug off the spark plug and then with our hand over the air inlet to the carb have someone give the mower 3-5 pull starts. Then, put the plug boot back on and try to start it. Did it work? Is it still running? If it started and ran your primer bulb probably has a leak and needs replacement. If it started and ran for a few seconds and died clean out the main jet and the bowl inlet.

You can look at the breakdown of the carb in your manual to see where these parts are. Or just go online and find a familiar carb diagram and work from there.

Good luck and be careful!

Toro personal pace mower 5 yrs old only runs 10-15 seconds.

Was gasoline left in the tank during off season? Sometimes gas will break down and clog the jets in the carb. The priming bypasses the carb so when you put fuel in by pumping the bulb it runs, but dies becasue no additional fuel is coming through the carb after the primed fuel is burned off. Sounds like you need to clean the jets in the carb and in the future, use Stabil in gasoline to keep it from breaking down.

6 yr old mower starts, won't run

sounds like a plugged high speed jet in carb - you can attempt to prime again , push at least 7-8 times - once it fires continue to push primer to keep running - it may clear out the carb if this doesnt work the carb will need to be removed and cleaned
