These instructions are for Microsoft SQL Server Standard.
Go into the Enterprise manager.
Select your server on the tree view on the left. Go all the way down to "Management" and click on "Backup".
This will allow you to set up the backup.
Check the box called "Schedule". This will allow you to select a schedule for automatically performing the backup.
Good Luck.

Creating a new database using an MDF file

An MDF file isn't a backup file isn't the main data file (or master data file depending on who you ask) hence the file extension MDF. You can attach the MDF to the database by right clicking on the databases folder in Enterprise Manager (SQL 2000) or Management Studio (SQL 2005) then selecting all tasks and then Attach Database.
When you do this you will get an error about the log file missing. This shouldn't matter as SQL Server will simply create a new log file for you.
This will only work if the SQL Server was stopped when you copied the MDF file from the old SQL Server. If you copied the file while the SQL Server was running this file probably will not attach either and you will need to get a valid backup of the database.
Download help tool for sql database - SQL Server Restore Toolbox.

I have installed sql-server management studio at Win-XP professional.. but it is while run this it is looking for LOCAL SERVER... but it is unable to find any local server at my system.... pls solve my...

First of all you need to be sure that when you installed sql server you also checked Database server. I assume you have.

Then you need to check if SQL is running.

You have to go to start and type services.msc in the search field.

then you have a list of services. go down to sql server and check if its running.

Now go to sql management studio and connect to your local server.

You also might have a instance name. like local server\sql express or an other name.

Sql script

The best way to accomplish your task is to Start SQL Management Studio. Go to Management, there you will see Maintanence Plans. When you create a new maintanence plan there is a wizard that will walk you through eveything. (What, where and when to backup). Maintanence plans can also do much more like DBCC (consistancy checks) log truncation and more.

If you're backing up to a folder on another server, just make sure the folder is shared.

Hope that helps.
