When using the ADF load the document with the side you want to copy, fax or scan facing UP in the ADF.

When using the platen glass load the document with the side to be copied, faxed or scanned facing DOWN on the platen glass.

Power on the printer and open the top platen. You will see a glass surface, place your picture with the printed side down onto the glass and close the lid.

On a computer with a Windows based system, double click on "MP navigator." You can find this on your list of installed programs from the windows start menu, listed under "canon pixma."

When the page opens it will give on screen instructions, step by step as they are performed by you.

The Canon scanners are only one piece, you can only replace the entire scanner as no separate parts are available. The last one I replaced was $95.00 for the part.

Yes you can clean the glass but you will have to remove it first.

The scanner is not made to be taken apart. Canon only replaces the entire scan assembly, so there is no cleaning. It should be new enough for a warranty replacement..

This is what the service manual says:
(1) Clean the Document glass.
(2) Check the connection
between the contact sensor
and SPCNT board (JCCD1).
(3) Replace the SCANNER
unit.
(4) Replace the SPCNT board

Sometimes, the reason for a black line is dirt on the glass. Try cleaning the glass and rollers so there is no dirt that will stick to the glass from the rollers.
Also the original document make sure there is no dirt or creases as the creases will translate into a black line on the receiving end.

Best left alone this one, even printer technicians dont remove glass on the scanner unit they just replace the whole scanner assembly, the reason? there are a lot of plastic clips holding it together and springs and cables that are easily dislodged,

often the improvement in scan quality isn't as great as one would think.
the scanner assembly can be replaced as a unit for around $200

Just clean the glass top of the scanner and the slit of glass on the left hand side of the scanner.
