SOURCE: singer stylist sewing machine 534 is not stitching

Feed dog drive gear(2) are plastic and are probably stripped. Always replace them in pairs. While you are at it replace both hook drive gears as well. It will run as good as new.

Why does it make a knocking noise as it sews?

the needle position is up tight in the holder and no where else
the cut away bit of the needle faces the bobbin case hook and the groove in the needle faces the end of the machine and gives clearance for the thread to pass through the material
from your description and what you did, the needle /hook timing needs adjusting as it is out
turn the machine over by hand as in sewing and watch the position of the eye of the needle and the bobbin case hook
just as the needle starts to move up, the hook should be just above the eye of the needle at the edge of the needle
The adjustment is by loosing off the screw on the vertical shaft at the end of the machine that is attached to an arm that moves the needle up and down and move that bit up or down until the needle is positioned correctly to the hook
tighten up the screw
next is to check the needle tension is not too tight
workshop manuals are available on line in pdf version or take it to a sewing machine repair shop for a proper diagnosis

Sounds like you've got a thread jam going on in the bobbin case area. Good cleaning and a new needle will probably fix it. See: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091202121550AAHxN8y

Possible problem is the machine has thread caught in the hook area, or the feed dogs are packed with lint. Remove the needle plate and clean out all thread and lint.

Brand new machine. Heavy Duty Singer 4423 I sew ripstop tarps including a double layer of grosgrain edging. After one tarp the machine has begun to squeak horribly with each stitch. Why? What can I do as...

I would suggest that the words "heavy duty" applied to a machine sold for less than $150 is probably taking a little bit of artistic licence.

Grosgrain edging is very stiff so you will probably need at least a 100 size needle for this and they may well go blunt pretty quickly. This could be the squeaking noise, needles will "pop" and squeak if they are blunt. Change the needle and see if it stops.

I would suggest that if you are doing straight stitching in large volumes for commercial purposes, this is not the right machine, you need something like a Singer 20U industrial machine, a good workhorse which will do straight and zig zag stitches.

I have one of these with a 3/4 hp motor in a table and it is so strong, great for sewing tents, horse blankets etc. We used it for attaching vinyl to 1/2" foam for ride-on tractor seats, something it did really well. Different needle system to domestic machines and can sew heavier gauge thread too.

Sorry, this probably isn't what you wanted to hear about your new machine. Try changing the needle and see if it stops the squeaks. But you may need to reconsider your choice of machine.

Singer Model 5050 Timing Problem

Actually, timing of needle vs, shuttle is not very easy job several factor you should check on.There is belt ot sometime a shafting with worm gear and helical gear under machine w/c drive the shuttle with the bobbins in timing order,Any one of them is present on the timing adjustment can be done by releasing the belt or the helical gear, besure machine is unplug then set all mechanism on low dead center meaning the needle move to utmost lower position catching this by the shuttle and bobbins at center position. No motion applied if this was set up,engage the belt with pulley and the bobbins link holder tigh allenscrew besure the needle is lower dead center at the center of shullle bobbins catching needle without motion when setting back at original position. If this was made manually move it on handwheel going up and side down the needle gradually if the needle move freely several time and it was catching this by the shuttle hook bobbins.if ok put thread bobbins and upper thread dial tension with the needle.Move machine on handwheel try to catch the bobbins thread,If this so your machine is ready to sew again if problem occurs on alignment repeat adjustment on perpect alignment, besure all parts on upper casing of machine specially two drive gear are in normal alignment.

Wheel won't turn

Hello,

The same thing happend to me with an older model (Singer XL 10). I have been sewing a decorating stitch and the machine stopped suddenly. Now I am not able to turn the hand wheel anymore like I should (I can move it a little bit, but the needle does not move up and down and the wheel is getting stuck). When I try to use the pedal the motor makes a horrible noise and stops. The needle is not moving up and down.

Is there a solution for that problem? I moved from Europe to Australia and have not used my machine since. Today is the first day, I was cleaning and oiling it and it first sewed perfectly. In case that there would be thread stuck somewhere, how could I possibly clean that? I already took off the plastic from the head, but I can not see where the problem is.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Best regards,
Nelly
