Spin cycle stuck makes loud noise

My Kenmore 70 fills, agitates, drains but does not spin the basket, the coupling is still intact and spins the drive just above the coupling, is there something else just for the the basket that could be replaced....this happened after I washed a large comforter.

Assuming your washer is direct drive 70 series (no model # given)... and the coupling is intact... you may be experiencing an internal gearbox problem.

This is a 9 out of 10 on the difficulty scale - and probably not a good idea to attempt if you have never done this type of repair before.

If you wish - please use the "continue with this expert" option and reply with the exact model # of your washer (ex. 110.875477), and I can point you to a new transmission.

Additional information would be helpful too...

Are you checking the agitate with clothes in the machine - or just water?
Can you spin the agitator by hand?
Have you tried to "help" the spin cycle manually while its trying to spin?
Is there any clicking sound during or just before the "spin" cycle?
If you advance the timer manually - does it spin?

Thanks for using FixYa - please remember to use the "Continue with this expert" so we are connected in the future.

one more thing you may want to check is the lid switch - it will not spin if the safety switch is bad.

with the lid open (when its supposed to be spinning), use a screwdriver to manually trip the switch.

Do you hear a click when you press it?

if you feel the switch isnt acting properly - you could add a jumper wire (if you have that skillset) between the poles of the switch and see if the drum begins to spin.

It sounds like one of two things :

1. By pass the lid switch to rule this out as a problem.

2. I would replace the clutch, and see if that fixes it.Mostly in 99% cases clutch replacing will solve problem

3. If that does not fix it, then you are looking at replacing the brake tube assembly or the motor coupler is gone.

thanks.please do not forget to accept the solution.keep updated.

Either your timing motor has broken or the gears that it drives are stripped. The timing motor is easy to replace but if the gears are stripped you will need a whole new dial assembly.

Basket won't move-noise

do you notice if it agitates?
if it doesnt agitate it is just a simple coupling
if it is making a humm noise its the motor
if a LOUD rumble ONLY on spin cycle, its the basket drive assembly and the clutch.

Kenmore 70 series agitates but does not drain or spin cycle.

If the unit is not draining or spinning it sounds like a lid switch. If the unit is draining but not spining it sounds like a drive coupling.

When this machine is not spinning, the water should still be able to drain, as the motor drives the pump on the same shaft as the coupler for the tranny. Set to the spin setting and depress the lid switch, if the water still does not drain, you may have something stuck in your pump, which would also lock the motor shaft and not allow it to spin or agitate. If the water does drain, check the motor coupler, which is located between the motor and transmission, if broken, the motor will run but there is no drive to the transmission. Hope this helps...

Broken Washer

it could be the direct drive coupling that connects the motor to the transmission. fill it up with water and see if it will agitate, if it will NOT agitate then it is a good chance that this is the problem. 0404472.jpg

worse case scenario is the transmission is bad, but this is unlikely.

You most likely have a broken coupler between the motor and gearcase.
You can buy the part for about $10 or have someone come out and replace it for about $150-200.
If you will post the complete model number from the the washer so I can see which style cabinet you have, I will try to walk you through the repair. It isn't very complicated if you are handy with home repairs.
With the age of the machine it probably just needs a coupler, but it could also have a problem in the transmission or basket drive that has caused the failure.

Loud clicking noise - wont agitate or spin

I had the same clicking noise. Turned out to be the coupling between the motor and transmission. A $15 plus 1 hour labor fix
