Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have a Protron 42 inch LCD flat screen that is about 3 years old. When I turn the TV on, I get a loud static-like noise from the TV. The sound lasts on and off for 10 to 20 seconds and then the regular audio for a TV program starts. There is no audio until the noise stops.

I am not really electronic literate but my father-in law is. I will have him look at your instructions. Also, I see that the Protron 42 Inch LCD flat screen is refered to as a projection tv?

As I understand it, The red wire from the black box is the EHT Cable. I follow the red EHT cable from the black box to the back of the picture tube. Where it connects withe the picture tube I will find the EHT cable cap. I then place one end of a multi-meter lead to a metal part of the chassis and place the other end gently under the EHT cap and expect a pop as the electric charge discharges.

I want to add that I noticed that when passing in front of the TV, I could feel heat and what feels like a static charged area in front of the screen. Is that because of the EHT leakage?

then It seems that there is EHT Leakage from the EHT Transformer Anode Cap!

    Generally
happens during rainy seasons, or if your TV is placed near a window or
near an AC, due to excess of moisture in the air.

    Unplug the TV
and wait for an hour to discharge all residual charge in Capacitors.
Open the back, and look for a thick red cable leading from the FBT. (It
is a Black Block with a thick red cable running from it to the rear of
the Picture Tube). Take a sturdy Electrical cable with the conductor
visible at both ends. (Multimeter Leads will do.) Now, ground one end
of this lead to any Metal part of the Chassis, and gently ease the
other end under the Cap of the EHT Cable. BE VERY CAREFUL, as there are
    very High Voltages involved!
Do it Gently, and you will hear a POP! This indicates that the Electrical Charge inside tha Picture has been discharged.
Now Take dry cloth and wipe clean the area around the Anode Cap.

Close the back of the TV, and switch it ON. In all likelihood your problem should be resolved.

BUT, I REPEAT, DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, AND ARE VERY VERY CAREFUL.

    good luck
    and be safe

Try turning off different lights near the room or in the room that it is in. Our tv does that if the overhead light in our bedroom is on, it's a room right next to our living room.
