Question about Broan-NuTone Nutone Aluminum Dome power Attic Ventilator for Roofs up to 2200sq.ft. with PSC Motor - RF68HRPSC Fan

1 Answer

Broan attic ventilator appears not to be working

Normally comes on when outside temp hits 72, it's 85 out now and no fan. After further inspection, I don't see any visible problems and the unit does not appear to have a master on/off switch, just the thermostat and not matter which way i turn it, no fan.
Is this a fire hazard?

Did you check to see if the motor was warm or made a noise?

Maybe you should check to see if you have power to the fan.If you got power and it don't run, then you will have to replace it.

The outside unit is not working on my Heil Air conditioner

The attic fan is not a part of your a/c system, and you should not run it while you are running the a/c. If you are currently using the attic fan, it is possible that someone wired it so that the a/c won't turn on while the attic fan is on. Otherwise if the thermostat is set below room temp, and says it is calling for cool, then the problem is most likely coming from an issue at the outside unit itself. Make sure to check your fuses, at the fuse panel and outside breaker. Hope this helps

FYI.. the only part of the system that might use batteries is the thermostat.

Combo lite/vent fan/nite light affected by heat?

There's probably a thermal switch in the fixture which turns the fan on when the lights are on for a period of time and heat accumulates in the fixture. It sound like the heat from the attic is setting off the thermal switch. When the attic heat drops, the fixture works correctly.

This is a catch 22 situation, because if the upper housing in the attic is insulated from the attic heat, the insulation will prevent heat dissipation from the heat generated by the fixture's light bulbs. So, for safety reasons, the upper housing should not be insulated.
I'll need to work on this to come up with a fix.

No heat or cold?

is the inside unit in a closet or the attic. if in the attic there may be a float switch in the drain pan and you might have hit it causing the outside unit not to come on

Attic fans

I just fixed a Broan-353 with a similar problem - the fan was short-cycling, turning on and off within a minute or less.

These fans have a thermostat which is designed to turn off 10 degrees below where it's set to turn on. Apparently, one failure mode is this temperature delta stops working I've had this happen twice, each time after about 3 years.

Replacement thermostats are available from Broan for about $30 http://parts.broan-nutone.com/broan/Shop It's a 10 minute repair if you have easy access to the fan.

Installation of a Panasonic Fan FV-05VFL2...

If you are not very handy I don't think I'd tackle this project. There's going to be drywall cutting, backing to install, attic crawling, wiring, ducting to attach, proper insulating. As an electrician I've done this sort of thing in between 1 and 2 hours, depending on how smooth things go. If you find somebody you trust that's done it before who is willing do to it on the side for cash you're looking at $25-$60 for labor. Is it worth it to you?
