The belts keep slipping off, brake foot pedal shudders and it just stops moving

SOURCE: Deck belt adjustment

Unless you adjusted the old belt when it started to stretch you either have 1. too long of belt or 2. (most likely) routed the wrong way in relation to the idler or "mow" lever pulley.

twords the rear of the deck there are two bars with pins that hold the deck.they should have 3 or 4 holes where you can adjust the rear of the deck.check to see if there set to the middle somewhere,if so you can disconnect the 2 pins and try going up 1 hole iif that didn't work try down 1 from original point.

If you are not a heavy footed braker... then you have an ABS module problem. There are several sites on line that will do an exchange for a rebuilt one for around $100. If you are a heavy footed braker, your car is behaving normally, Just don't press so aggressively and the vibration won't happen. ABS brakes are supposed to shudder and vibrate when activated, they apply pressure to your brake calipers at roughly 15,000 times a sec, off and on to prevent the brakes from locking up and the car loosing control. In a panic stop, press a car with ABS brakes ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR as hard as you can, use the steering wheel for leverage and push the pedal down a bit more, RIGHT BEFORE IT COMES TO A COMPLETE STOP.

Smart car kangaroos and stops when I am trying to get out of tight car park. I may be activating the hill assist brake by holding foot brake pedal?

Please note that the Smart car is equipped with an auto brake system where if you remove your foot off the brake pedal , it will not disengage till you press the gas pedal , other wise you might have a problem .
Please try with out having your foot over the brake pedal and get back to us.

If the problem is due to warped brake discs, you will typically feel a mild pulsing in the peddle when braking firmly. Also, when you are experiencing this shudder, taking your foot off the brake (when safe to do so) should cause it to stop. If that is not the case, I would consider again the transmission. I am on my second Caravan, so I speak from experience. The Caravan transmission should have the fluid changed every 30,000 miles to keep it in top performance, especially if you are carrying any heavy loads or pulling a trailer. When you are slowing to a stop, the transmission must downshift through each of the gears. If it stays in the higher gears at too slow a speed, you will feel a shudder. Sometimes this can be corrected by changing the transmission fluid. Be sure to use the proper Chrysler fluid for your transmission. Typically it is the highest (overdrive) gear that causes the shudder. You can determine this by moving the gear selector from "D" to "3" when you are experiencing the shudder. Other possibilities are alignment, worn stabilizer bar bushings, worn ball joints, and out-of-round tires. Most of these also involve some accompanying noises though. Good Luck.

Won't Fully Engage Drive Gears


If the machine has been sitting idle for a period of time it is probable that the cutter spindles have failed / rusted bearings. They suffer from wet grass/ water seepage when working and when let stand idle for a time will rust up the balls in the bearings. Loosen the drive belts and see if the cutters can be turned freely by hand .

I had the same problem with my Craftsman Lawn Tractor. The Drive Belt (which is not adjustable) is only engaged when the Brake Pedal is released (the Brake Pedal is located on the left side of the tractor, near the foot rest on my Tractor).

The Symptoms: My Tractor lacked driving power, and would not go up an incline, but the mower deck was powerful and working fine, even though the Tractor seemed to lack power and moved slower than usual, and would not travel up an incline.

I too, changed the Drive Belt, which initially seemed to help somewhat for a very short period of time, and then the same, lack of power problem, re-appeared again. The belt was not the problem, but only seemed to work somewhat due to the rougher texture of the belt's surface against the pulleys.

I also changed the Plastic Clutch Pulleys that engage the Drive Belt, thinking that they may have been worn down to a point that the Drive Belt could not fully engage with these Pulleys. No Luck.

NO ONE, NOT EVEN SEARS ON-LINE REPAIR ADVICE CENTER HAD A SOLUTION. THIS WAS VERY FRUSTRATING INDEED.

There had to be a solution: After much investigation, I eventually discovered the problem, which actually was easy to solve, and I would like to share this simple solution with others facing this same Frustrating Problem.

The Brake Pedal, when released, causes the Drive Belt Clutch Pulleys to move, and thus Tighten the Drive Belt. When you look under the Tractor, there is a Protective Metal Plate mounted to the Bottom of the Main Tractor Frame which covers the Brake Pedal Shaft and attached Mechanisms. Over time, Grass Builds up in between the Protective Metal Plate and the Tractor's Main Frame Deck, creating a very narrow space between these two pieces of metal.

This area is very difficult to get at, and almost impossible to clean out. Over time, Grass Clippings accumulate in this hidden area, and harden to an almost rock hard clump.

These Hardened Clippings accumulated between the Brake Pedal Mechanism and its fully released metal stop position. Thus, preventing the Brake Pedal Mechanism from moving to its fully engaged position.

I used a long screw driver to break up the compacted grass clippings, and an Air Compressor Blow Gun to break up the packed grass and blow the area clear. It takes awhile to do this cleanup, and is a bit messy, so do it outside, but be patient, and be sure to clean out all the grass that is lodged in this hidden area.

What was happening was that the Packed Grass was so dense that the Brake Pedal could not Fully Release, thus only Partially Engaging the Clutch Pulleys and the Drive Belt, hence the appearance of a loose Drive Belt even when the Brake Pedal was released.

Once the Packed Grass Debris was cleaned out, you will immediately notice the Drive Belt being tighter than it was previously when the Brake Pedal is released, and when you test drive the Tractor you'll find that everything works perfectly, like it was brand new.

Belt stops when i walk on it


with item going 2mph, stand on foot rails, hold on handles,with one foot try stopping walking belt-look at front roller while doing this-if walking belt slips around frt roller, its the walking belt loose. at each corner there is an adjustment,with proper allen wrench, turn CLOCK WISE one turn EQAULLY on each side!! Then recheck,keep doing this untill it quits slipping-Small moves is best don't crank.
Now on other hand if walking belt Stops with frt roller, its the MTR dr. belt under the hood, to tighten,with 2 9/16th wrenchs, I loosen mtr mount bolt,with one hand apply pressure to mtr, retighten, or have wife apply this pressure with her foot,but don't over tightn-u want to turn belt 1/4-1/2 inch on side. Also check walking lube under walking belt!!

I have a 96 a4 tdi an there seems to a shudder coming through brake pedal when i brake .pads ,calipers and discs are fine.


A shudder coming through the brake pedal is the sign of a warped rotor. You say the rotors, pads, and calipers are fine. Did someone inspect them or do they just "look" fine? A visual inspection usually will not show if a rotor is warped. You'll need to have them turned or replaced to be correct the problem.

Clutch/Brake Pedal Problem


first off your biggest problem is its built by MTD.they build about 90% of the riding lawn mowers you see in the stores that are 20 horse and under,every thing from a yard machine to a craftsman to a cub cadet. you need to get under it and fallow the linkage from your pedal to your rear transaxle. that link is adjustable if it is not , then the arm it attaches to is .you need to adjust it whichever way takes slack out of the belt, if all the adjustment is out then replace the belt and adjust it accordingly

My brakes seem to give for a foot or so of travel when creep stopping


Sounds like air in the lines - it'd be worth bleeding the brakes to see if that helps.
