Suggest that you bled the system including the pump and get all the air out.

SOURCE: 04 dodge diesel cuts out while driving at speed

Hi. I had the same problem on my 2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Cummins. I went to the dealer and they did a bunch of diagnostics and they replaced my fuel pump. At the same time they put in a retrofit kit that moved the fuel pump to the inside of the gas tank. I have not had the problem since. The cost was about $1,200, but my 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty covered it and I had to pay the $100 deductible.

SOURCE: dodge 3500 diesel lift pump

When the key is turned to the start position, the pump should run for about 20 seconds. Do this 3 or 4 times to prime the pump.

If it still doesn't start, the bad lift pump may have damaged the injection pump. Crack a fuel line loose (don't remove it) and turn the engine over, you should have fuel at the fitting.

SOURCE: I have a 1998.5 dodge 5.9 cummings diesel 24 valve

It was located on the drivers side of engine close to fuel filter housing, but dodge has been selling and installing kits that change it to the in tank style for quite some time, so if not on block it must have been converted at some time.

2004 Ram 2500 Diesel 100k Lift pump not pumping out of banjo fitting at injection pump. Options before replacing LP. James

James,

Since you are pulling a vacuum to draw the fuel to the fuel pump a very small pin hole will cause the pump to not draw fuel. On my Cummins I connect a fuel line to the tank side of fuel pump and ran it into a pail with diesel fuel to verify an air leak in the line to the tank. The ECM electronics control module on mine a 1999 turns the pump on. You could use a jumper 12 volt to the pump verify it is getting 12 volts. You should be able to hear it running.
I replace the factory fuel pump on mine with a Fass pump and used a small relay to power the Fass pump without using the ECM and it works great.

2000 dodge ram diesel 2500 . What is a fuel injection pump mechnical failure? a fuel valve feedback circuit?

This usually happens when the lift pump gets worn and fuel pressure drops below 7lbs and the injection pump has to work harder by pulling in the fuel and will destroy the pump, your is probably a vp44 fuel injection pump it needs replaced and they are expensive 1200.00+ but also change the lift pump or change to a fass fuel system,if the lift pump went out and you replace the injection pump it will ruin it in a short time.
The injection pump is not an easy job to change or for a novice mechanic as it has to be set in time with the engine at top dead center, and then the whole fuel system needs to be bleed of air.

Truck ran completely out of fuel.

is there a primer valve on the pump? it would unscrew and then pull out if it had one. take a look around the injection pump. but i belive that uses an electric lift pump it should not need to be primed there may be something else going on here.

2001 dodge 2500 diesel 24 valve intermitant hesitation

Have you ever had the mechanical lift pump go out on these vehicles? If the fuel pressure drops under 5psi on the VP44 injection pump for any length of time, the diaphrams get weakened and especailly when the warmer seasons come back, you will notice fuel delivery problems. A new/rebuilt pressure pump is required! Sorry for the bad news, if indeed this is the case. One solution/prevention is to replace the lift pump with the upgraded Mopar (goes into the tank now) or an aftermarket pump like the FASS pump or the like. Anyone that has the VP44 injection pump should upgrade ASAP! This is a common problem on the OEM mechanical lift pump on this particular run of Rams. Need to do it before you run up a costly repair bill later on down the road. The stock/OEM lift pumps WILL go out, sometimes as little as 12k miles, sometimes 50k miles.....I had 3 go out, Stock at 43k, Mopar replacement lasted 31k and the 3rd (aftermarket OEM) lasted 14k. I had a fuel pressure guage installed a very long time ago to alert me of failures. The 4th go around I installed the FASS and now it maintains 21 to 27psi even with chip mods switched to extreme! I am still on original VP44 pump (knock on wood!)
Good Luck!
