External hard drive wont stay connected to computer

I have a Seagate external hard drive (160 gb) It is about 2 years old and have never had problems with it. It froze up on me earlier today and now when I turn it on light goes green i hear the sound on computer that it is connected and immediatly the light goes off and sound chimes that it is disconnected again but i can still hear and feel the fan running. Is there anything I can do about it or is it just lost??

This depends where the failure is.

If your controller board for the external casing or your power supply have failed the drive can be removed from the casing and placed in a new one($30-$40), then it should work fine. If the circuit board on the hard drive or an internal circuit for the drive has failed then you may require the help of a pro.

Try connecting this USB hard drive to another computer.

If doesn't work..it might be a problem in your Operating system. i recommend to you to reinstall your Windows OS.. theres a 4 reasons why it happen appear the error... deffective USB cable..corrupted driver of USB device for seagate, virus infected of your systems..and maybe your hardive is deffective. Reduced Hard Drive Capacity with Internal to External Kit

Problem can be tricky.. though i offer my two cents.

1. some BIOS have upper limit of hard disk capacity. check that out. try connecting IDE device to IDE connector in same comp and see if it is being detected properly.

2. seagate guys are true .. IDE to usb conversion can be tricky ... a lot depends on card convertor.

my advice would be if you have precious data on it ... first take a backup of it, if possible connecting the disk to nomal ide connector.

Wont stay connected

You need to isolate the problem. Based on the info that you have provided, it could be the FireWire port of the computer, it could be the hard drive itself or it could be the FireWire cable.

1. Try connecting the HD into different FireWire port.
2. Try other computer.
3. Try another FireWire cable.

Doing these steps would give you an idea which is giving out the problem.

I don't have an instruction manual for my Seagate 160 GB External

Well, if it is a USB Drive, you can locate the drive on your Computer. and using Windows explorer would be a lot easier, click on start, all programs, accessories, Then click Windows explorer, and on the left hand panel, you can then search your drives and located the data that you want to copy and paste. For example, I am going to copy my documents from my (C:) drive, and I then will paste onto my USB flash Disk Drive (J:)..you will see the files go from (C:) to (J:) drive once you start the process...thats it!
