PC will not see Maxtor 80GB DiamondMax Plus 9 as seconary slave.

I have main HD as primary & 2nd HD as primary slave on first channel.
I have DVD/ READER/WRITER as primary on second channel and cannot get the "Plus 9" to work as secondary slave. PC will not see Plus 9 in this position. If I remove the DVD unit and only run the Plus 9, the PC will see it, but only at 33gb.

Barry

    Hi,
I don't know the model, but it's a Gigabyte board.
    OS HD is 80GB
1st removable HD ( in slide rack ) is 20GB
2nd removable HD ( in slide rack ) is 80GB ( Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9)

I only got the PC recently, from a friend. It's about 4-5 years old.
    Thank you.
    Barry.

Hi,

Two thing,

First, never use a Maxtor HDD as a slave to a CDROM/DVD, doesn't work and tends to cause stability issues. So try swapping the jumper on the CD/DVD to slave and setting the Maxtor to Master, this should get it working.

Second, if it is showing up as 33GB, you have the Jumpers set to limit capacity(designed to avoid troubles on older systems. If this is the case, you likely have a single jumper in the center row of pins between the power and data cables. If it only works as master at the moment, then you likely have the neter row(limit size pins) and the one closest to the data cable(Master Pin) both plugged in.

Change your DVD/CD to slave, remove the limiting jumper and ensure the Master jumper is installed on the Maxtor, then be sure the end connector on the ATA(likely marked master) is plugged into the Maxtor and the middle connector(Slave) is plugged into the DVD/CD, this should have you all fixed up.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

What is the jumper pin placement to make a slave of a DiamondMax Plus 9, 80GB hard drive?

The manual is linked below and section 3.3.1 covers jumper settings.
The slave setting shows the park position so you have a jumper on the drive so you can reconfigure it later.

A quick answer is that the slave setting is no jumper at all on the jumper pins.

Change a hard drive

As a general rule, SATA drive like the DiamondMax Plus 9 160 GB Hard Drive can be made either master or slave by just plugging the drive cable to the appropriate alternative SATA port on the motherboard without changing anything on the drive. MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG THE PC FROM THE MAIN POWER FIRST! Most motherboard will have two such ports on the motherboard in close proximity to each other (just follow the 'flat' usually red or yellow cable from the SATA drive towards the motherboard to locate the ports). Hope it helps.

Power comes from the power supply. Check yellow and black and red and black. You need both 5v and 12v. Are you sure you have the jumper set correctly for the application? Master or single - master with slave present or some computers require CS (cable select)
