Right - since it is no longer supported by the manufacturer - your best bet is to find one on eBay or locally at a flea market or yard sale.
Good Luck!!

The tines rotate on my sears rear tine tiller, but the transmission does not engage to make the wheels drive forward or reverse.

Ok, so I Just tore mine down and the input shaft that the pinion gear rides on has wear patterns that cause the gear to not be able to slide and cause it to shift. Problem is probabally caused by poor lubrication as this is at the top of the transmission. I am gonna try to rotate the pinion gear 2 teeth clockwise as it slides smoothly here and add a bottle of lucas automotive oil treatment as it is clingy to gears and more fluid than the grease supplied. My only worry is that it is too thin and may drip from the case so I think I may rtv the gasket. If I really wanted to spend some money on it I would order the shaft and gear from sears at about $70 but I think without better lubrication It would just happen again so I will just try my cheap fix. This is not a hard job but may be too much for some beginers. Hope this info helps.

We have a rototiller, craftsman, bought new at sears several years ago. Model No. 944627591, Craftsman 9 HP, 21 inch tine width, rear tine tiller with counter rotting tines. Pinion input gear is sheared...

The model ID starting in 944 indicates your tiller was manufactured by Husqvarna. This division has since been purchased by AYP. A quick online search finds that www.needlawnmowerparts.com lists having one for $55 plus shipping. I have not dealt with this company, so I can't recommend or not recommend them.
It is very common for tiller makers to not offer internal transmission parts. Transmissions are difficult at best to repair and reassemble. Used tillers are available from time to time, check your local classified ads or www.craigslist.com to find one. If you decide to go with a new tiller, i would recommend trying www.northerntools.com or www.mytsc.com to start your search.
As far as longevity on the new transmission, Sears won't guarantee any of their parts longer than 1 year. However, you should expect a replacement part to last as long as the first one did.
Sears doesn't give year models for their equipment, but usually supports replacement parts for at least 10 years. Most equipment manufacturers don't build their units to last longer than 10 years....they want you to buy another one.
I hopethis has helped.
Good luck!

I need to find out what size belt for tine engagement on a Dayton 5hp Tiller model # 32885 C144B

a simple way to figure out the length is to engage the tine mechanism and take a string and wrap it around the pulleys mark it and take it to any belt store, and buy the Belt you need. You will need to know if it's a 3/8s or 1/2 inch drive belt. Normally tine belts are half inch or 5/8 wide on a 5 horse power motor, You can get these belts at sears or Nappa auto parts store. hope this helps.

I have a craftsman 19 in dual rotating tines, rear tine tiller. # 917-293493. In mid till, the tines quit turning. Won't shift into any gear. Wheels are locked. Any ideas?????

It is going to be a transmission issue. You can try with the engine off, turning the trans pully by hand in the opposite direction that the motor was turning it.
Some gears in the trans got crossed up and locked.

I have craftsmen 5HP rear tine tiller, while tilling picked up a rock which jammed the tines and stalled the motor. when i restarted it had loud grinding noise and then locked up stopping me from being able...

If the tiller tines where jammed, the tranny and motor where still trying to turn and there could be a couple different parts broken. The tranny main shaft make have busted, the tranny gears could have jammed. If the motor does start, than that is a good sign. If not than the connecting rod or crank may have snapped.

I am guessing you will probably have to dismantle the transmission and see if there are any broken gears or shaft.

Can't find filler plug on transmission

Jim the older tillers did not have a place to put grease in. You have to break the case apart then it takes 00 grease. These are sealed units and don't need additional grease. Check with Sears.com parts lookup for a new manual. I am on my second Craftsman r/t tiller now rebuilt the transmission on the first and wore it completly out then bought a new about 8 years ago. About to rebuild the transmission on it.
