1 Answer

Freezer unit for model ARB8057CSL which is frost free lower freezer unit has a frost build up on rear wall where I believe the heater unit is located behind. I've had occasion to defrost with a hair dryer which results in normal operatio for a week +, and then the built up starts again. I'd like to know what it might cost for parts, availability, and instrustion.

I went to the Amana web page and looked up model #. They have the parts lists w/ prices and exploded parts drawings available. This will enable me to repair our unit.

How do you make a freezer frost free?

Frost free means that the evaporator coil will not accumulate a thick layer of frost. It will not prevent frost from accumulating on the walls of the freezer. To slow down the amount of frost build up inside the freezer, do not keep the freezer door open for any longer than necessary. The freezer door seal may be defective. This would allow moisture in that would freeze on the inside walls. A heater with timed intervals to come on is one way for a frost free feature. But this will not work for frost build up on the inside walls of the freezer. It would only melt the frost and then it would refreeze again.

Top half of freezer not freezing, and fridge not cooling well

What is the model number of your refrigerator? I need to know that to help answer your questions. Does the wall of the freezer have a layer of frost building up as in this photo HERE?Hopefully this is only a defrost problem caused by a defective defrost control, defrost heater or defrost thermostat. Try defrosting the evaporator behind the rear wall of the freezer with a hair dryer. You also could turn off the refrigerator remove all the freezer contents and place a bucket of hot water and shut the door for a couple hours. Be aware that if there is a lot of frost that there may be water overflow to the floor below the refrigerator. If this is a defrost problem the frost behind the rear wall will look like this photo HERE If you defrost the evaporator manually the refrigerator will continue to cool good for up to a week depending on how much the doors are opened. This will give you time to find the model number located around the fresh food section door frame. Locate the model number and let me know the number so I can tell you what components may need to be changed, Thanks Sea Breeze
If after removal of the rear panel in the freezer you see something like this with only a few rows with frost on them like in this photo HERE the problem is a Freon leak

Refrigerator is to warm, freezer to cold model is ed5ghexnloosso649995

In most cases something has blocked the vent from the freezer. Sometimes you catch this at a point that the freezer seems too cold but just what may be happening is the ADC control has failed causing the evaporator to freeze over with frost blocking air flow to the fresh food section. The ADC is Adaptive Defrost Control and can be forund here=> ED5GHEXNL00 Fresh Food Section Controls in that photo location 6 is the ADC or defrost control board=> W10353224 Defrost Control Board If you disconnect refrigerator from power source and lower control panel you can look this board over on both sides. Sometimes you will see burn marks or signs of heat damage, not always.

Second most Likely is the defrost heater behind the rear wall of your freezer=> ED5GHEXNL00 Unit Parts and in that photo part location 33 is the=> 2188175 Defrost Heater Assembly

Ways to test this heater are on same page. Then we always need to consider the defrost thermostat found here=> ED5GHEXNL00 Air Flow Parts item 6 in that photo. At -5 to +5 degrees the contacts inside should be closed and once the freezer goes into defrost the defrost thermostat opens its contacts at 50 degrees to prevent extended defrost. Part Number=> 2321799 Look inside rear of the freezer and if a layer of frost is building on rear wall then you most likely have a defrost problem causing the freezer to be colder. If fan in freezer is working properly then you should have a steady stream of cold air flowing to the fresh food compartment. Let me know just what you find so I may assist you in the repair, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Ice in bottom of frost free whirlpool freezer

Most likely the drain (located behind the lower panel rear wall) is obstructed. You will want to clear out the ice build up and use a turkey baster with hot water to clear the frozen drain tube.

The freezer is 19deg and the lower food compartment only gets to 60deg

Model number is always valuable in order to be able to give you more accurate information.

Check rear wall of freezer by feel for frost. Heavy, even frost indicates likely problem in the defrost system. Defrost heater (most likely and in freezer behind rear wall), defrost thermostat (in freezer-must be checked at freezer temperature) or one of Defrost timer or Defrost control (Circuit board) generally located in Refrigerator compartment but may be inside rear of outer case. Defrost heater and defrost thermosts can be checked with an ohmmeter. Disconnect power to refrigerator, remove rear wall and disconnect at least one side of any component you are testing. If the heater and defrost thermostat test good for continuity then replace the defrost control.

Without repair refrigerator will work perfectly for about 7-10 days after being COMPLETELY defrosted, including behind freezer panel, until thick frost builds up again cutting off air flow to both compartments

1999 Frigidaire Refrigerator

Check rear wall of freezer by feel for frost. Heavy, even frost indicates likely problem in the defrost system. Unplug unit. Defrost heater (in freezer behind rear wall panel), defrost thermostat (same area-must be checked at freezer temperature) or Defrost timer-located lower back outside of unit. Near compressor. Do continuity test on heater and defrost thermostat and if they show continuity (good), replace defrost timer. If not, replace the one that tests bad.

Defrost coils fully. Reassemble.

Please let me know if I have helped with comments and rating.

Freezer building up with frost

Sounds like the defrosting system has a faulty timer/board, faulty heating element or bad electrical connections to these components.

More info, let me know...

Amana energy saver not keeping fridge section cool enough. HELP!

if there is frost build up on rear wall of freezer section the unit is not going through defrost cycle which builds up frost on evaporator and restricts cold air flow to the fresh food section. one of three things are bad. defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost timer. if no frost on rear wall you might be low of freon.
