Starter will not engage

started is not engaging the motor, it should "spin out" and engage a gear, usually just disassemble and clean old grease

Starter spinning wrong way

Wow. Probably the positive and negative connections have gotten reversed in the solinoid and starter motor. Still stuck? I recommend a DIYer's repair manual that shows electrical connections for the starting system.

My truck motor wont turn over? The started is kicking in ' but the motor does not turn to start?

You say your starter is kicking in..is it spinning and not turning the engine over? If so you have a problem with the flywheel teeth or starter gears not engaging..if no spin just a click..your battery is to weak to turn engine or you starter selonoid or starter needs replaced...good luck..

I put a alternator on now it wont crank, jus spin over

Ok , what type of toyota and type of engine, year too would help.
When you say it spins over is the starter motor making noise but the motor does not turn? Cranking and spin over are the same terms of words. Cheers

1997 Mazda MPV 3.0L 2WD Auto: The starter engages the motor spins valve train moves but wont run starter sounds different, spins faster

have a compression check done on the engine If the motor spins faster then that indicates a compression problem form no resistance in the motor.

My yamaha thunderace wont start you press the start button and the celenoid just whines the starter motor spins ok when direct power is supplied

Hi, Anonymous your starter motor is not/was not the problem that dubious title goes to the starter drive/Bendix/clutch which is a separate component that is activated by the starter motor it is a mechanical gear driven part that engages the clutch pack to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. My 2002 yamaha vstar 1100 classic started and ran fine. now the starter just spins. it wont turn the engine over to start it. i already changed the battery. what could be the problem?

The one way clutch inside the motor is slipping. On the back side flywheel is a one way clutch that grabs the starter gear when the starter motor spins. It is designed to let go of the gear once the motor fires up. If the mating surface of the one way clutch and the starter gear becomes rough or chattered, it will no longer grab and turn the motor over. To repair this you will have to take off the crankcase cover and pull off the fly wheel to replace the one way clutch and the starter gear.

My 92 saab 9000 wont start. it makes a spinning sound sort of like a hairdryer. the battery is fine and i get the oil changed every 3000 miles and all the other fluids regularly checked. so what could it...

Either the timing belt/chain/gears has failed, which can really change the sound of cranking, but the engine visibly goes around.

If the engine does not turn (as it sounds is the case with your car), but the starter spins fast enough to be described as sounding like a hairdryer, then the starter drive is bad and the starter will need to be replaced or rebuilt.

The starter drive is turned by the starter motor, and the drive in turn turns the gear that engages the flywheel of the engine. The part that turns that gear will not let the starter motor be pushed by the engine — it has a one-way, overrunning clutch in it. If the engine got a chance to spin the starter, the starer would simply explode. It is maybe 10 or 15 to one between the engine. One good start using the gas pedal would spin the starter like 15 to 25 thousand RPM...

If that overrunning clutch fails the starter motor cannot spin the gear that turns the engine.
