Question about Gateway 200 ARC Notebook

1 Answer

Gateway 200ARC goes to "Last Known Good Configuration" screen

I have installed a new motherboard, hard drive, and DVD player in this laptop. When I start up computer it proceeds to the screen where you can choose to go into safe mode. When I choose any of the choices the screen just freezes and won't let me go any further. I have tried entering the BIOS setup to make sure it was set to boot to the DVD so I can reload the O/S to the computer but it never boots to the DVD, just goes to that screen.
Help! I am working on this computer for an Iraq war vet and she really needs to know if I can fix this or not.

Brand new 160gb hard drive, brand new DVD reader/writer, new motherboard. I am using the original Gateway Operating System cd that came with her laptop to try to reinstall the O/S.
I took the hard drive to work with me, hooked it up to our forensics computer, wiped the hard drive, formatted it to NTFS then brought it home and reinstalled it into the computer. Put O/S cd in dvd drive but nothing happened. Personally I don't think that the message from the DVD drive is getting to the computer as it keeps going back to the "Safe Mode" screen. Any ideas as I would love to fix this war vets computer for her.

Try reseating the dvd drive and then go into the BIOS to be sure that the drive is being recognized. Actually go into the area of the BIOS that shows the name of the dvd drive that it recognizes.

It it does recognize the dvd drive properly then try other boot cd's. It still may not recognize them.

If so try another known good dvd drive in the laptop and if you have the same problem then take out the hard drive and then see if the system will boot up off of the dvd drive then. If it still doesn't boot then the motherboard is bad.

If it does boot then that means the new hard drive is bad and shorting out the dvd drive controller on the motherboard and the hard drive would need to be replaced.

Hope this helps clear up things for you and sorry for not responding sooner.

  1. Turn on the computer.
  2. After the Gateway BIOS logo appears, repeatedly press the F8 key. The Advanced Boot Options menu opens. If it doesn't the motherboard is most likely bad).
  3. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (advanced), and then press the ENTER key.
If that does not work, turn PC off, Do this again, but this time choose 'repair your computer' at the top.
If it still does not work, either your hard drive went bad or Windows is corrupt. Either way Windows must be re-installed.

Bootmgr is missing

Could be an issue with the hard drive or corrupt boot files. Try starting the machine in safe mode by pressing F8 key repeatedly at startup and choose the last known good configuration option. If that doesn't work, try Inserting the windows disc into your dvd drive and restart the computer. Choose the 'press any key to boot from cd' option. At the installation screen choose new installation. Choose language settings at next screen and at the next screen choose 'repair my computer' and choose the 'startup repair' option.

BATTERY LIGHT ORANGE-LAPTOP TURNS ON AND VAIO LOGO COMES UP BUT THEN SCREEN GOES BLACK AND WHITE CURSOR FLASHES ON TOP LEFT OF SCREEN

It could possibly mean a faulty hard drive. But before we conclude, try to boot to safemode through advanced boot options. How to get there? tap on F8 as soon as your computer turns on. If you get the advanced boot option, then good. Try to choose the option that says Last known good configuration first. If it does not work, try it again but this time choose safemode. If all else fails then you might need to do a full re-installation of the operating system. If still trying to do a re-installation does not detect the hard drive, then you will need to have it replaced.

Gateway 200arc motherboard problem

If there are two wires running from the power button on your case to the motherboard, take them off and try jumpering those two terminals with a jumper or something that will make contact for just a second and them take back off. Your power button may have fried along with the power supply.

Gateway 420GR will not boot up

Try hit F8 before gateway screen start last known. Start the computer using the last known good configuration
  1. When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
  2. Use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.
  3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.
note.gif Notes
  • Choosing Last Known Good Configuration provides a way to recover from problems such as a newly added driver that may be incorrect for your hardware. It does not solve problems caused by corrupted or missing drivers or files.
  • When you choose Last Known Good Configuration, only the information in registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet is restored. Any changes you have made in other registry keys remain.
  • NUM LOCK must be off before the arrow keys on the numeric keypad will function.
If this doesn't work you go into setup and make sure your system is finding your hard drive or you will have to find your restore disk. mysleuth

Notebook Gateway 7330GZ won't boot

Hm...That sounds like either the motherboard is dying/dead or a device is (such as the hard drive). I would suggest removing one piece at a time and see if you can get past that screen. The most annoying would be if it is the DVD drive since it's probably the most difficult device to remove from the laptop. (If memory serves it involves removing a certain screw from the bottom and then getting under the keyboard so you can push it out).

Do you have a second stick of RAM installed? Mine died a while ago and caused real heck with my 7330GZ.

X5DAL-G restart

if theres a click, then its either the hard drive or the monitor click when it shuts off, motherboards don't make a sound. When its starting up press F8 to enter safe mode and select last known good configuration and see if it starts as normal, but is sounds as though the boot.ini is damaged on a bad sector of the hard drive and either try a windows repair or replace the hard drive.
